A thoroughbred equestrian website
By SHEILA RAHMAN     October 28, 2008      Categories: Cyberspot

ALL GEARED: Peter has passed on his passion for horses and all-things related to his sons Zack Ali (right) and Zaine IskandarWhen I contacted Peter Ibrahim Abisheganaden seeking to feature his website (equestrian.com.my), I had absolutely no idea that it was going to be sort of an endurance ride. And like the 80km one that stretches into the wee hours of the night.

Possibly when Peter started the site in 1999, the tagline of "South East Asia’s Equestrian Centre" was the humble beginning point – because today, while it geographically may be situated here, his readership covers the worldwide fraternity and its informative facilities encompass everything and anything unequivocally equine.

"It is Asia’s best read Equestrian website with over 500,000 page views downloaded monthly," Peter concedes, although the fact that approximately 50 per cent of his readership is from the United States (we checked with Alexa), indicates that the Cyberspace non-barrier has been conquered.

WEBSITE: http://equestrian.com.myEquestrian.com.my is exhaustive with an amazing wealth of information of the latest happenings in the arena, from Arabians to abuse of horses (discussed in the forum – http://equestrian.com.my/forum/).

He also, in great writing style, shares his personal horse-world related happenings on his blog Pete’s Blog-in-the-Garden (equestrian.com.my/blog/polo) – even the freak not-so-great riding style accident in July that fortunately only landed him in hospital. "My surgeon says the ceroma injury I have is akin to injuries he sees in cyclists who have skidded along the road at top speed, or people who have been run over by a car. In my case it was a horse that sat on me a few times and may have got in a few good kicks…"

Heck, one of Peter’s latest news posting (uploaded very early last Thursday morning) is on the launch of the Atari equestrian sports and lifestyle video game "My Horse and Me 2" in South West France that day, with "enhanced grooming and horse care games to build a strong bond between horse and rider, plus a complete Eventing mode, including jumping, dressage and cross country… the most realistic horse simulation ever seen in a game."

BLOG: http://equestrian.com.my/blog/polo/After first daylight the same day, he hops onto a flight for Pattaya for a meeting of the South East Asian Equestrian Federation (and) a seminar on showjumping course designing. Peter has held a Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI) Course Designer status since 2001.

Peter’s passion (with likely odds is a champion mount’s name) is his wife Natasha, and kids – Zack Ali, Zaine Iskandar and Asha Zulaiqa – and providing facilities to his extended equestrian family, both on and offline.

And speaking of passion, did we mention that Natasha is an FEI International Candidate Judge in Eventing who has judged at the SEA Games, in Australia and New Zealand, and was a technical official at the Sydney Olympics?

"She started the SEA Eventing League in 2005 and raised funds to send the Malaysian team to the Doha Asian Games, where Husref Jeremiah won a bronze medal," says Peter. "She’s quite a girl!"

Please tell us a little about yourself…

Peter Ibrahim Abisheganaden, age 48. Horseman, polo player, former showjumper and eventer at SEA and Asian Games level; saddlery specialist: managing director of Zack’s Tack, a saddlery store in Kuala Lumpur, at the Royal Selangor Polo Club.

When did you start your website?

Started Equestrian.com.my in August 1999 as an equestrian community news and information website. It has grown to become Asia’s best read Equestrian website…

Your reasons?

We wanted to give real information to people interested in equestrian sport and to promote the many types of equestrian disciplines such as showjumping, dressage, eventing, endurance and even polo, as these are all equestrian sports that are played in Southeast Asia.

We have achieved the initial objectives, but aim to improve on the quality of service. Promotion of equestrian sports is an ever-continuous quest.

Has your "webbing" changed your life?

Early starts, late nights…. It is a daily commitment.

Any regrets?

None whatsoever.

What is the foremost feature in Cybersphere that amazes/irritates you?

Self-important but anonymous blogs

If you had to choose one website or blog to interact with, which would it be?

It would be sad to have just one to interact with, but if it is just one then I would have to say Facebook. Why? Because through Facebook, I interact with my friends.

Through Cyberspace communication many things can happen. What would you really like to achieve?

More of a community feeling and more personal interaction between members of the community.

If there were someone you could influence to take up blogging or starting a website…?

My son Zack Ali. A six-year-old’s world view is never to be overlooked.

If you could do it all over again, any changes?

I’d happily do it all again. The only thing I’d change is that I’d lose the anonymous commentators.
