I REFER to the recent advice from the Barisan Nasional chairman, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, to the coalition's Members of Parliament at a pre-council meeting on Monday to "behave and be present" during the current Dewan Rakyat sitting.

It was reported that the PM was serious when he wanted their attendance to ensure a full quorum at every session.

THE time of the year when school-leavers around the country receive their Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) results has just passed.

To those who scored high marks, I wish you all my heartiest congratulations and do keep up the great work.

To those who did not, do not despair and never give up because this is not the end, but the beginning of a second chance in life.

MUCH has been said in the media recently about the “plight" of squatters and how they are living in deplorable conditions, among others.

Faced with the barrage of such stories, one can’t help but analyse the issues. As a lay person, looking at it independently from the outside, some key points escape my understanding.

The media reports always play the same tune. It’s the classic David and Goliath tale – the squatters akin to David and the “mean, big” corporations play Goliath.

I REFER to The Malay Mail's March 12 story headlined ‘Why not eat them?’ about a suggestion by the deputy director-general of the Veterinary Services Department on consuming dogs as a solution to its overcrowded pounds.

AS a multicultural, multi-religious country, Malaysia has the benefit of the great faiths that teach us to understand, believe and put into practice the noblest of values.

Excellent among these is the enduring quality of compassion.

The government, non-profit organisations, corporations and individual Malaysians, often working in partnership,
have been in the forefront of bringing aid to communities and countries ravaged by violence or natural disasters.

Friday, March 12th, 2010 10:34:00

I REFER to the CIMB statement dated Feb 28 this year per attached copy which I received on March 9.

Prior to the arrival of this statement, I received a call from your bank on March 1 alerting me that my account was overdue with the outstanding being RM408.53.

I immediately made a cheque payment for RM410 over the counter.

Since this statement dated Feb 28, arrived only on March 9, could your bank clarify when it was sent out to me?

AS a Child Court Advisor, I ask that we act with seriousness and speed with regard to provisions of the Child Act 2001 to prevent abuse that is on the rise.

Why such disregard for the Act which requires family members, doctors and child care providers to report any child abuse?

Why are we so lax on this law when failure to report can land offenders a RM5,000 fine or not more than two years in jail, or both?

However, teachers, councillors and members of the public should also report despite them not being required by law to do so.

THIS is with reference to Works Minister Datuk Shaziman Abu Mansor's statement that the government is evaluating a proposal to build another highway linking the northern and southern parts of Peninsular Malaysia to complement the North-South Expressway (NSE).

THE past five years have not been easy for the public transport sector. Frankly, there have been many ups and downs — mostly downs.

I can count on one hand the number of successful improvements that I have seen, while the number of failures are countless.

That is the nature of public transport and any other public service. People tend to remember the failures far more than the successes. I prefer to remember the successes.

KUDOS to the government which will ratify the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) next month.

This is an important step forward in line with the 1Malaysia concept of "People First", especially addressing one of, if not the most neglected, segments of the population.

IAM a frequent traveller to Penang.

Early this year, I was on my usual trip  back to the island.I bought a ticket from my usual express bus  company at the Puduraya terminal in Kuala Lumpur.

I was supposed to board the bus at 7.30pm, but it arrived at 8.30pm and only left the station for the long journey to Penang at 9pm.

NOWADAYS, I appreciate any neighbourhood that embarks on programmes to mitigate crime and promote healthy living.

We must work together as neighbours but we don't do enough of that now. Some do not even know who their neighbours are.

I AM a Malaysian and my wife is an Indonesian.

We registered our marriage in Jakarta in 1999 and then in Malaysia after processing her social visit visa at the Malaysian Embassy in Jakarta.

That process alone took four months and three trips to Jakarta to settle. Our first child was born later in the same year and our second in 2004.

All these years, we have been renewing my wife's annual social visit visa, but after 11 years of marriage, my wife recently raised a few questions which prompted me to write in.

AL-FATIHAH. Azri, thanks for being a good friend. A happy-go-lucky guy, you always came with a smile and made others smile too. You brought joy and happiness to others. You are a one in a zillion. No one can replace you and I am proud to have been your friend, your schoolmate, your batch mate, your classmate, your housemate. May God bless your soul. — Muz

BACK in the 1960s, I was in the Scouts movement. In order to qualify for the ‘Adventurer Badge’, I temporarily lived in the home of my troop leader, Salleh.

My short stay there was the most memorable in my life. Salleh’s mother was Puan Salasiah.

ILLEGALS found hiding in the ceiling (Feb 25)

THE raid conducted following a public tip-off? Well, I don't need any tip-off because during special lottery days in Klang, especially in front of the Magnum 4D outlet, I will see these 'China dolls' peddling their bodies in broad daylight. Also at some stalls, these China nationals are seen selling tea, calculators, etc. It's like a 'Visit Klang Year 2010' where China 'tourists' come over to show and sell their products. — Do Unto Others

I RECENTLY came across a posting of a link (http://www.malaysiandogsdeservebetter.blogspot.com/#ixzz0gKgXMVBO) on my friend's Facebook, that contains shocking information and images of how our dog pounds in the Klang Valley treats lost and stray canines.

IT is heartening to hear many employers promising to cooperate with the Home Ministry on the illegal foreign workers issue (The Malay Mail, Feb 22).

The ministry had earlier advised  the Immigration Department to delayits nationwide crackdown on these unregistered employees, which was originally scheduled to take place on Feb 15, due to the Chinese New Year celebrations.

We have, in fact, been too lenient and compassionate towards this group for too long. Their presence has upset many quarters and the general public.

I READ with delight that from Feb 19 to June 18 this year, there will be a competition aimed at increasing public awareness of consumerism.

This is an excellent measure to not only inform consumers of their rights but also to educate them on how to shop and avoid pitfalls when buying.

THREE women were recently caned under syariah law for engaging in illicit sex and this landmark punishment brings up an interesting point.

When will such punishment be extended to other offences which truly deserve such a deterrent sentence?

I am talking about an offence which claims many lives daily, where the perpetrators seem to 'get away' scot-free more often than not.

DURING the recent rumours on 'missing' Employees Provident Fund (EPF) nominees, I rushed to its Kajang branch office in Jalan Reko on Feb 4 to update the record on my nominated candidate.

Not only were my worries put to rest, my transactions at the premises with a convenient parking area and an impressive counter service were a breeze.

I was especially amazed by the service given by the information counter as the front-line personnel were professional and helpful.

WHEN I was at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport in Sepang close to midnight on Feb 16, I noticed a large group of passengers frantically rummaging through their luggage in front of a check-in counter along the 'M' aisle.

I asked one of them why they were removing items from their bags when their luggage had already been sealed with security wrappings which these passengers had earlier paid RM10 per baggage.

They told me that it was because their baggage weight was just over the 30-kilogramme limit allowed for one check-in luggage.

WE wish to refer to your report headlined “Government can’t pay to stop Damansara 21” (The Malay Mail, Feb 12).

The Federal Territories and Urban Wellbeing Minister was, of course, referring to the Damansara 21 Project that Medan Damansara residents have been opposing for some time now.

To put it very mildly, it is quite disappointing to read such a suggestion coming from the minister. Safety issues are not for bargaining so that a compromise can be worked out.

I AM referring to the recent news about how many of the 98 local councils in the peninsula are not up to mark in the government’s first star-rating system on performance and delivery.

Why did they fail? As a former municipal councillor in Negri Sembilan, I believe there are several reasons.
Firstly, councillors must know what is expected of them and their tasks, and act accordingly.

How many are trained to discharge their duties? Appointed by their respective political masters, the councillors
seem to serve the latter more than the rakyat!

MANY road accidents, especially on highways and expressways, can be avoided if motorists observe basic safety rules and if the authorities give serious attention to some obvious contributing factors.

I VISITED a few Temiar villages in Kelantan in January. It was tough getting there, what with the road being chewed up by logging trucks.

A group of village chiefs, from seven or eight villages, have petitioned the government about the situation because they are facing possibly the hardest and most difficult times of their lives.

CONGRATS, Dr Zambry. Now that the political uncertainty has been resolved, focus on the economic development plans and winning back the hearts of the people. Remember that the people had never betrayed BN but it was because of arrogant, rotten politicians and their tidak apa attitude that made the people turn against it.

VICTIMS of Selangor-YBK clash: Serendah residents: People of Serendah lament loss of development opportunities (Feb 8)

TRANSPARENCY is about relying on professional auditors to do their job. It does not necessarily mean you need to be part of the organisation. If a political party is allowed to be part of YBK, there will be possibilities of the fund being allocated only to a certain group of people that supports that party. Please re-look at the activities of the YBK in the past and you will know that they are doing a great job! – Daim

MY family and I moved into our current home in Taman Bukit Kepayang (Phase 6), Seremban, Negeri Sembilan, about six years ago.

It was a beautiful place, close to a hill which was covered with a lush forest. People loved to go hiking there while some visited a Hindu temple at the peak.
