LONDON: European stock markets wobbled yesterday on investor unease over ineffectual EU efforts to resolve a debt crisis gripping Greece. European markets lost ground "as investors continued to fret over Greece's sovereign debt problems," said City Index analyst Joshua Raymond.

The London FTSE 100 index slipped 0.04 per cent to close at 5,642.62 points after having at one point risen to a 20-month high.

The Paris CAC  40 fell 0.50 per cent to 3,938.18 while the Frankfurt Dax lost 0.20 per cent to end the session
at 6,012.31 points.

NEW YORK: US stocks ended mixed yesterday after fresh economic data came nearly within expectations.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 45.50 points (0.42 per cent) to 10,779.17 in closing trades, marking  an eight-session winning streak that took the blue-chip index to almost  18-month highs.

The Nasdaq composite added 2.19 points (0.09 per cent) to 2,391.28 while the broad-market Standard &
Poor's 500 index slipped 0.39 points (0.03 per cent) to a provisional close of 1,165.82.

TOKYO: Japanese land prices fell at the fastest pace for five years in 2009, as the nation's weak economy struggles with another bout of deflation, official data said yesterday.

Costs across the country fell 4.6 per cent on average, the land ministry said in its annual land price survey, the
biggest drop since 2004, when they fell by five per cent. The country's core consumer prices also logged the 11th straight month of decline in January, as the country continues to be dogged by deflation.

LONDON: European stock markets closed in positive territory yesterday, driven higher by investor satisfaction with a US Federal Reserve decision to maintain super low interest rates for the foreseeable future.

NEW YORK: US stocks posted modest gains yesterday after a tame inflation report eased fears of interest rate hikes a day after the Federal Reserve issued a slightly better economic outlook.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed 47.69 points (0.45 per cent) to 10,733.67 at the market close. The Nasdaq composite rose 11.06 points (0.47 per cent) to 2,389.07 while the broad-market Standard & Poor's 500index added 6.65 points (0.57 per cent) at a provisional close of 1,166.11.

WASHINGTON: The United States sees vast potential to expand trade with Indonesia but Jakarta needs to undertake economic reforms, a top official said yesterday ahead of President Barack Obama's visit.

Commerce secretary Gary Locke said that the administration saw major opportunities in the energy sector as Indonesia seeks to meet a sharp rise in demand while curbing carbon emissions blamed for global warming.

NEW YORK: Blockbuster shares plunged nearly 30 per cent yesterday after the heavily indebted movie rental chain said it may be forced to declare bankruptcy. Shares in Blockbuster, which has been struggling to keep pace with rivals Netflix and Amazon, shed 29.18 per cent on Wall Street to close at 28 cents.

Blockbuster at one time operated as many as 7,200 stores in the Americas, Europe, Asia and Australia but has been forced to close hundreds in recent years as consumers moved to other options such as online or on-demand film rentals.

WASHINGTON: Facing election year pressure over unemployment, US senators introduced legislation Tuesday that would impose tough new penalties on China if it failed to revalue its currency.

The legislation, which enjoys support from both sides of the political aisle, would punish currency manipulation as an unfair subsidy and could trigger a set of retaliatory US action.

The move came as lawmakers in Washington stepped up criticism of China ahead of November midterm US elections, accusing Beijing of securing an unfair edge in trade by keeping the yuan artificially low.

LONDON: Britain's Labour government on Tuesday came under fire from opposition Conservatives as a leaked European Commission report suggested that its huge public deficit needs cutting faster than anticipated.

MELBOURNE: The massive Papua New Guinea liquefied natural gas (LNG) project has reached financial close and the project now is proceeding in full, the Australian Associated Press (AAP) reports.

Oil Search, which holds a participating interest of around 30 per cent in the project, said the major partner,

KUALA LUMPUR: Boeing has added the fourth 787 Dreamliner to its flight-test fleet with the completion of the first flight of ZA003.

The airplane departed Paine Field in Everett, Washington, at 10:55am (Pacific Time) and landed at 2:01pm
