IT’S good that Federal Territories and Urban Wellbeing Minister Datuk Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin has accepted the appeal by nightspots on Jalan P. Ramlee to be allowed to continue engaging DJs and live bands.

The road is undoubtedly Kuala Lumpur’s most popular entertainment strip. Also at stake is the employment of close to 1,000 people, mostly Malaysians in their 20s.

THE Malaysian Youth Council (MBM) condemns the recent attacks on several churches. Such an act is  contrary to the clear principles and values of all religions, and can affect the harmony and unity of this country.

THE largest and most colourful religious festival for Hindus in the country, Thaipusam, is around the corner.

As usual, more than a million Hindus and spectators, especially tourists, will be converging at major Lord Murugan temples nationwide, especially the Penang Waterfalls, Batu Caves in Kuala Lumpur and Gunong Cheroh in Ipoh, Perak.

LIM of Penang had an unhappy time when he decided to terminate his P1 W1MAX service late last year.

He says he had returned the modem and was expecting a refund within 45 days as promised by the 4G broadband provider.

"After 50 days, instead of my refund, I got another bill from them even though I was no longer their customer!"

JESSICA had to rush her sister to the University Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC) on Dec 11 last year – and was perplexed by some of the hospital's policies in treating patients.

She says a nurse requested her to pay for the MRI scan and X-ray before they were conducted on her sister at the emergency ward. "I wonder why the hospital could not let my family settle the fees when my sister was  discharged."

OUR appalling maintenance culture has earned us an unpleasant tagline: “First class infrastructure, third class mentality”.

MISGUIDED anti-palm oil campaigns will only harm Asia’s poor. Such misguided campaigns by celebrities and activists lack understanding of why forest and the orangutan are being lost.

Contrary to anti-palm oil campaign claims, various analyses find that poverty is the root cause of deforestation and orangutan population loss. The evidence is clear that if you want to reduce environmental degradation, the best option is poverty reduction by giving allowing people – especially in poor rural communities – a sustainable livelihood.

IT is high time the Minister of Natural Resources and Environment takes a real hard look at the more than 30 animal establishments – zoos, mini zoos, aviaries, bird parks and crocodile farms – existing in almost every State in Malaysia.

The Housing and Local Government Minister, too, should adopt a similar approach as some State zoos fall under its management.

APART from catching stray dogs, what are local councils doing about stray cats? Stray cats roam the neighbourhood looking for food and shelter, becoming a nuisance when they leave their droppings  all over.

Their faeces bring flies to the houses – this is unhygienic and is a health hazard.

It is indeed saddening to know that we have till today not learned from our past bad experience involving national disasters.

When accidents happen, all the relevant authorities will step forward to proclaim that safety rules exist, but no action is taken and the control measures will not be made public to create awareness.

RECENTLY, I noticed a friend had packed food in plastic and then transferred the food into a container
as he was going to an event that did not allow food to be packed in plastic and polystyrene.

I was told they do this as it was not convenient to bring a container to pack food. Therefore, they pack the food first in plastic and transfer it to containers.

THE renewed call for single stream schools is timely, given the various racial issues that have become politicised and given prominence in the media since last year’s landmark elections.

After almost 20 months, there is this nagging worry of possible polarising along racial lines.

THE Education Ministry should impose new guidelines on government schools and if possible, private schools, governing outdoor activities – with a new student protection law, policy or committee under the ministry’s surveillance.

It must stress that schools and learning institutions must contact and personally engage with a student’s parents or guardians in allowing a student to perform or participate in an outdoor activity.

The current system of giving out letters of announcements and agreement should be stopped immediately.

I refer to the Malay Mail article “Towering Malaysian” by Haresh Deol.

It is indeed good to read that Arul Visvasan Suppiah is doing well, playing county cricket in England. He walks in the footsteps of many other Malaysians - not necessarily in sport - who have done well overseas.

The recent budget may have brought cheers to many but sadly, it was a big blow for the civil servants and especially to the Congress of Union of Employees in the Public And Civil Services.

The Cuepacs president has been assuring civil servants time and again that the government has indicated positively to its request for a bonus payment.

Many civil servants were utterly disappointed when there was no announcement of a bonus.

UPON reading the Budget 2010 report that National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) loans will be converted to scholarships for top students who obtain first class honours or the equivalent in their studies, I couldn’t help but sit up and take notice.

MOST Malaysians are now aware of the poor state of our urban public transportation system.

Even if they do not experience the congestion, delays and overcrowding on a daily basis, they are probably  familiar with the situation and can talk for hours on the causes and effects.

ANNA is alarmed that her glass dining table suddenly shattered. “I was in bed at 11.10pm when I heard a loud, explosive sound of glass shattering. I was startled when I saw the table in my living room as I found that it was broken and there were pieces of glass all over the floor.”

ANNA said she usually uses the table to work on her laptop until around midnight.

THE authorities have verified that the recent khalwat raid conducted by some residents’ association members was not authorised and we now know how to tell whether someone is authorised or not.

Presumably, anyone assaulted during this event should lodge a police report for the assault.

Yet the hullaballoo is just amazing.

Yes, this was a bad thing. But, it hardly is anywhere near the end of the world.

PORN STAR Maria Miyabi Ozawa, 23, was banned from a comedy flick shoot in Indonesia yesterday — all
because she is fond of taking her clothes off.

In the United Kingdom, the start of trials of a new naked-image X-ray machine at Manchester airport has got tongues wagging about virtual disrobement.

Now, imagine if this X-ray machine that enables security staff to instantly spot any hidden weapons or explosives is introduced at airports in Indonesia and Malaysia. Stark mayhem!

It is not our practice to reply to criticism or praise – on the articles and commentaries we carry in the CPI website. However the accusations by Malay Mail columnist Rusdi Mustapha warrant a rebuttal.

His column makes a number of unfounded allegations, the most scurrilous of which are:

COME 12.01am tomorrow, taxi drivers throughout the country will be smiling ear to ear.

They finally get that fare increase they have always wanted. And, hopefully, they will be able to make ends meet.

Although its going to hurt the pockets of many who rely on taxis, commuters will have little choice but to give in.

THE winds of change are blowing hard. The recently held Indian elections, Obama’s rise in America and our own Malaysian 2008 polls results have signalled the mood swing.

And to think we’ve always lived with change as the only constant in our lives. Adaptability is there but it is the willingness to change that matters really. Not just any willingness but for change required at the foundation level that never varies.

AS soon as Kuala Lumpur High Court judge Datuk Abdul Aziz Abdul Rahim made the ruling earlier this week that Datuk Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin was the rightful Menteri Besar of Perak, SMSes were flashed everywhere. There appeared to be jubilation over the judgment as many felt it would bring a quick end to the three-month-old political crisis.

Most, irrespective of political leaning, share the view that the only solution to the political impasse in the State is dissolution of the legislative assembly and the holding of fresh elections.

FORTY years ago (as of tomorrow), after the mid-morning interval, Mrs Yap, my class English teacher walked in and said school was out, we were to go home. Yippee!

Wait a minute. Nobody wants to look a gift horse in the mouth, but free of mental shackles mid-morning of a school-day, what’s the catch?
