SUDESH RATNARAJAH of Petaling Jaya is appalled that after a regular "polish", his barely month-old RM699
leather shoes have become discoloured.

He says when he bought the arch-supporting brown shoes from Foot Solutions at The Curve on Feb 2, he was not
informed on ways to care for the shoes.

When the time came for a polish, he did it based on the pair's state and condition.

"Judging from the visual appearance and colour, I proceeded to use a brown polish.

After polishing some parts of the shoes, I noticed the colour had faded," he says.

RUSHDY of Petaling Jaya is baffled how a Maxis telemarketer could call his fiancee and demand she cancel
her barred prepaid number in order to give it to someone else.

To make matters worse, no one in Maxis seems to know who that telemarketer is or the origin of the number
he called from.

"I called Hotlink and their postpaid department but was told that the number I mentioned is not connected
to Maxis," says RUSHDY.

MUCH has been said in the media recently about the “plight" of squatters and how they are living in deplorable conditions, among others.

Faced with the barrage of such stories, one can’t help but analyse the issues. As a lay person, looking at it independently from the outside, some key points escape my understanding.

The media reports always play the same tune. It’s the classic David and Goliath tale – the squatters akin to David and the “mean, big” corporations play Goliath.

AS a multicultural, multi-religious country, Malaysia has the benefit of the great faiths that teach us to understand, believe and put into practice the noblest of values.

Excellent among these is the enduring quality of compassion.

The government, non-profit organisations, corporations and individual Malaysians, often working in partnership,
have been in the forefront of bringing aid to communities and countries ravaged by violence or natural disasters.

AS a Child Court Advisor, I ask that we act with seriousness and speed with regard to provisions of the Child Act 2001 to prevent abuse that is on the rise.

Why such disregard for the Act which requires family members, doctors and child care providers to report any child abuse?

Why are we so lax on this law when failure to report can land offenders a RM5,000 fine or not more than two years in jail, or both?

However, teachers, councillors and members of the public should also report despite them not being required by law to do so.

GIRI of Kuala Lumpur claims Bank Simpanan Nasional (BSN) has been slow to issue him a cheque for the difference between his original loan and  the refinancing of his loan for an apartment in Kota Warisan Sepang.

"When I bought the apartment five years ago, I obtained a housing loan from BSN and they approved it within four months," he says.

"Last year, I applied for a refinancing of the loan on a longerterm basis so that I could get some cash from the  difference between my original loan and the new loan as I need money for further studies."

SELVI of Setapak, Kuala Lumpur is upset with the attitude of a RapidKL bus driver.

"I am a regular passenger of the T302 bus which starts its journey from the Wangsa Maju LRT station but there is a particular driver on this route who, after parking his bus, will go to the resting area for drivers and make passengers who have lined up to board the bus wait for a long time," she says.

WHATEVER that has been said and done about the United States of America, I believe it is still a great country and the people there in general are a great people who still believe in fairness and freedom of expression.

For all the major "faux pas” committed by the great America, it has succeeded in being a superpower that believes in freedom of expression.

IAM a frequent traveller to Penang.

Early this year, I was on my usual trip  back to the island.I bought a ticket from my usual express bus  company at the Puduraya terminal in Kuala Lumpur.

I was supposed to board the bus at 7.30pm, but it arrived at 8.30pm and only left the station for the long journey to Penang at 9pm.

NOWADAYS, I appreciate any neighbourhood that embarks on programmes to mitigate crime and promote healthy living.

We must work together as neighbours but we don't do enough of that now. Some do not even know who their neighbours are.

SHARLINI of Kuching, Sarawak, has been a DiGi prepaid user for the past eight years and did not experience any problem until Feb 12 this year when her handphone suddenly indicated "SIM inactive" about noon that day soon after arriving in Kuala Lumpur.

"I sought assistance at a DiGi booth at Tesco Kajang and was told that my problem could only be solved at a DiGi ser' vice centre," she says.

THEY are not allowed in my home. I am talking about local television newscasters or presenters reading the news of the day using language that I am not familiar with.

When they speak in Bahasa Melayu, their diction, intonations and inflections are totally off.

IT is heartening to hear many employers promising to cooperate with the Home Ministry on the illegal foreign workers issue (The Malay Mail, Feb 22).

The ministry had earlier advised  the Immigration Department to delayits nationwide crackdown on these unregistered employees, which was originally scheduled to take place on Feb 15, due to the Chinese New Year celebrations.

We have, in fact, been too lenient and compassionate towards this group for too long. Their presence has upset many quarters and the general public.

CHAN of Subang Jaya says he is surprised that his HSBC Amanah Credit Card can only be used at halal shops.

"Earlier this month, I went to a famous pizza-chain restaurant for dinner and when it came to paying the bill, I used my HSBC Amanah credit card," he says.

"To my surprise, the waitress informed me that my card had been rejected."

THREE women were recently caned under syariah law for engaging in illicit sex and this landmark punishment brings up an interesting point.

When will such punishment be extended to other offences which truly deserve such a deterrent sentence?

I am talking about an offence which claims many lives daily, where the perpetrators seem to 'get away' scot-free more often than not.

IN 1988, former Canadian New Democratic Party (NDP) Member of Parliament Svend Robinson came out in the open as being gay. He caused quite a stir in that country when he did that.

He also made headlines in Canada for being caught shoplifting. He pocketed a ring at an auction house that he later said was for his boyfriend.

WE wish to refer to your report headlined “Government can’t pay to stop Damansara 21” (The Malay Mail, Feb 12).

The Federal Territories and Urban Wellbeing Minister was, of course, referring to the Damansara 21 Project that Medan Damansara residents have been opposing for some time now.

To put it very mildly, it is quite disappointing to read such a suggestion coming from the minister. Safety issues are not for bargaining so that a compromise can be worked out.

I AM referring to the recent news about how many of the 98 local councils in the peninsula are not up to mark in the government’s first star-rating system on performance and delivery.

Why did they fail? As a former municipal councillor in Negri Sembilan, I believe there are several reasons.
Firstly, councillors must know what is expected of them and their tasks, and act accordingly.

How many are trained to discharge their duties? Appointed by their respective political masters, the councillors
seem to serve the latter more than the rakyat!

MANY road accidents, especially on highways and expressways, can be avoided if motorists observe basic safety rules and if the authorities give serious attention to some obvious contributing factors.

I VISITED a few Temiar villages in Kelantan in January. It was tough getting there, what with the road being chewed up by logging trucks.

A group of village chiefs, from seven or eight villages, have petitioned the government about the situation because they are facing possibly the hardest and most difficult times of their lives.

THOMAS is concerned about the dirty state of the food court, pastry stalls and market in Section U19, Sungai Buloh.

"The Shah Alam City Council should clean and spruce up these public amenities as they look unkempt and unhygienic, especially the stalls selling pastries," he says, and suggests that the council build new pastry stalls.

MY family and I moved into our current home in Taman Bukit Kepayang (Phase 6), Seremban, Negeri Sembilan, about six years ago.

It was a beautiful place, close to a hill which was covered with a lush forest. People loved to go hiking there while some visited a Hindu temple at the peak.

THE reading atmosphere in our nation is, unfortunately, still lacking to this day.

Statistics reveal that a Malaysian is not a bookworm as he or she reads only an average of two to three books  a year. This is a far cry even from other countries in the region, such as Taiwan, Hong Kong, Japan, South  Korea and Singapore.

Several reasons can be attributed to the poor reading culture in our country.

MY favourite British television series is MI-5, or Spooks as it is titled here in Malaysia.

I don’t watch the series on TV because of too many commercials and instead, get a whole season's episodes on DVD to see how MI-5 chief Sir Harry Pearce makes good decisions, controls his operatives with precision and professionalism, and keeps the nation safe from threats, both internal and external.

TO all Subang Jaya residents, please say what you want without fear or favour for the sake of everyone,  especially the children.

As long as no one sticks his head out to help others — including our elected State Assemblyman — to get Subang Ria Park duly gazetted as a public recreation park and a green lung for the township in perpetuity,
the issue will never end.

I WAS going to describe in my column this week about a book titled 19th Wife, a story of Brigham  Young, the prophet and leader of the Mormon church, then maybe allude it to Tiger Woods' 19th mistress and probably write about how Malaysians, especially the Malays, love to have mistresses. Then, I said to myself: “Nah! Boring!”

THE number of supermarkets and hypermarkets in Malaysia has seen tremendous growth since the 1980s.

The escalating costs of living and the need to stretch the ringgit have increased the opportunity and demand for lower-priced consumer goods retailed at hypermarkets.

During my recent visit to Singapore, I realised why driving on the roads in the island is not nerve-wrecking; they
are a lot quieter and more peaceful than back home in Malaysia.

Why is it so? It’s because motorists in Singapore are not fond of using the horn on the road. Also, they do not cut in and out of traffic despite being caught in a jam.

RECENTLY, I received a number of emails from various banks either asking me to update my personal details, reactivate my online banking account that had been frozen, take part in a survey where I would be rewarded with RM200 or allow my bank account to be used for third party transactions in which I would be paid a
'commission'.

All these emails required me to key in my personal details like online banking account user name and passwords.

ONNY of Taman Seri Keramat, Kuala Lumpur, alleges a breach of ethics by car repossessors  from a financial institution.

According to him, repossessors of AmBank (M) Berhad showed up at his house on the morning of Jan 11 when they forcibly moved his car that was parked outside the front gate and triggered the car's alarm.

ONNY claims the repossessors proceeded to hook up the car to a tow truck without informing him of what was happening.
