PUTRAJAYA: The government's effort in organising the Prime Minister's Trophy International Bahasa Malaysia Debate is to showcase Bahasa Malaysia as a language of culture and civilisation to the world community, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

The Prime Minister said the effort was one form of globalising a noble culture and civilisation as Malaysia wanted to ensure the phenomena of globalisation need not be one directional, from the west to the east, but could also be the other way round.

PETALING JAYA: The media have a social responsibility to work with the government towards nation building
despite having differing policies, prime minister, Datuk Seri Najib Razak said.

"The media might take a different path. Sin Chew, Utusan (Malaysia), other papers might take a different
path but although we take different paths, we must converge and reach our final destination," Najib said in his speech at the Sin Chew Media Group Chinese New Year Celebration at its headquarters, today.

KOTA BAHARU: Kelantan PAS deputy commissioner Datuk Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah said the state government will not prevent the move by the federal government to give the compassionate fund to the people of Kelantan via the Federal Development Department (FDD).

Mohd Amar, who is also the Chairman of the State Committee on Islamic Development, Education and Dakwah, said what the state government was demanding was the oil royalty and not compassionate payment.

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak is scheduled to officially launch the Borneo Convention Centre (BCCK) in Kuching on March 2.

Sarawak Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud would also deliver a speech at the ceremony, the BCCK said in a statement here today.

BANDAR JENGKA: There is no basis to have a special sitting of the Parliament to discuss the motion to drop the sodomy charge on Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Datuk Seri Najib Razak said yesterday.

Najib stressed the hearing on the sodomy case was not a "political trial", but on the contrary, it was a private trial.

"It does not involve government policy nor the stand of the government at all. It's a question of an individual (Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan) who has lodged a complaint, who was working in his own office (previously)."

KUALA LUMPUR: PAS has to make up its mind first before offering to hold talks with Umno on any issue, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said.

Najib who is also Umno president said this was necessary as experience showed that PAS had been inconsistent in its stand.

"I don't know what to say as his (PAS spiritual leader Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat) stand changes like the weather. Sometimes he agrees, sometimes he disagrees and sometimes it is closed. So, I don't know his real stand.

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak today announced the redevelopment of Kampung Baru in the heart of the city under a concept which, among other things, does not require relocation of the residents or land owners.

He said the residents and land owners would have the right to determine the type of development in accordance with their requirements.
