SINGAPORE: The Singapore authority will hold a coroner''s inquiry into the death of Malaysian Tong Kok Wai, a Singapore permanent resident who died after a hit-and-run accident involving a Romanian diplomat's
car last month.

Over 30 witnesses will be called to testify in the inquiry to be held from March 3 to 10.

Tong, 30, a hotel assistant manager died 10 days after being hit by a car while crossing the road with Sarawakian waiter Bong Hwee Haw, 24, in Bukit Panjang in the early hours of Dec 15 last year.

LONDON: A Singapore-flagged chemical tanker was hijacked in the Gulf of Aden on Friday, China's Xinhua news agency reported quoting the European Union naval force (EU Navfor) as saying.

According to Xinhua report today, the 20,000 deadweight-ton M/V Pramoni was seized when it was heading to Kandla in India, the Northwood-based EU Navfor said in a statement.

The ship has a crew of 24. It was the first attack in the new year by Somali pirates who have made tens of millions of dollars from seizing ships for ransom in the Gulf of Aden.

DESPITE having conferred the Distinguished Service Order (DSO) award by the Singapore government for his "outstanding contributions in fostering excellent ties and cooperation" between the Malaysian police and the Republic's police force, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Musa Hassan remains a modest man.

"To me, this is not a proud moment for myself, but it is a proud moment for the Royal Malaysian Police. It is with the efforts of my men that enabled me to receive the award so it is only right to say that the award is for my men also," he said when contacted yesterday.

SINGAPORE: Singapore's central bank yesterday dampened hopes for a quick recovery although the economy soared in the second quarter, saying a sustainable upswing is not in sight for the recession-stricken city-State.

"The growth is likely to be slow and uneven, and there will be ups and downs," said managing director Heng Swee Keat of the Monetary Authority of Singapore. "We are yet to see a decisive rebound," he said.

AN UNEMPLOYED Singaporean man who texted insulting SMS messages to a woman he didn't know was jailed for two weeks for the offence.

The Straits Times reports that Lee Wei Loon, 26, had sent a message saying: 'Can I make love with u. I give u 200. Service very good not to worry u will be very SHIOK.'

The woman accounts executive who received it last October, did not know who sent it and warned: 'U r messing with d wrong person. U'll regret tis.'

The man ignored the warning and sent another insulting SMS, asking: 'How big is ur cup?'

SINGAPORE: Authorities have busted an illegal labour supply syndicate led by a Bangladeshi man and involving around 100 foreign workers, a news report said yesterday.

Shamsul Hoque Abdur Rahim, 40, and three Singaporeans were arrested by Manpower Ministry officials and police following raids on various places in the city-State.

Shamsul faces 125 charges for abetting, contravening work pass conditions and engaging in a business without a valid work pass under the Employment of Foreign Manpower Act.
