PETALING JAYA: Saying ‘no’ to sex education in schools will not be fair to students, said non-governmental organisations.

Malaysian Islamic Consumer Association (PPIM) secretary-general, Datuk Ma’amor Osman, said the issue is how to have a suitable teaching model.

Educators must first ascertain what level of understanding students possess and then work out a module that  its, he told The Malay Mail yesterday.

Ma’amor said it was not about teaching students how to have sex, but more of how to safeguard their  reproductive organs.

PETALING JAYA: Consumer groups are all for the scrapping of the proposed tiered fuel pricing scheme that was to be announced on May 1.

National Consumer Complaints Centre (NCCC) chief executive Muhammad Sha’ani Abdullah said it was good that the government saw the scheme unfeasible.

“I’m all for shelving the scheme. I don’t believe anyone should be subsidised for fuel at all,” he told The Malay Mail yesterday.

He said the government must learn from past experiences, especially in 2007 when petrol price skyrocketed to its highest.

PETALING JAYA: Parti Keadilan Rakyat will not entertain any claim or request from Parti Rakyat Malaysia (PRM), PKR vice-president R. Sivarasa says.

This was because PKR leaders deemed PRM's existence as unethical.

“Though the Registrar of Societies (RoS) has legally acknowledged PRM as a political party, we (PKR) do not agree with PRM's existence because it violated the agreement made to merge (with Parti Keadilan Nasional) in 2003,” Sivarasa told The Malay Mail yesterday.

PETALING JAYA: Smart cards or vouchers will be issued to people categorised as poor or extreme poor for identification to facilitate aid distribution to them.

Such aid will include subsidised public services like healthcare and education and a pilot project for this is to be launched in Kedah.

The government aims to issue these cards to poor and extremely poor households by the end of this year.

Also, all welfare agencies will be merged into one entity to improve the efficiency of the aid distribution.

KLANG: Former Port Klang Authority (PKA) general manager Datin Paduka O.C. Phang, Kuala Dimensi Sdn Bhd chief operating officer Stephen Abok and architect Bernard Tan Seng Swee were charged at the Klang Sessions Court today in connection with discrepancies in the multi-billion ringgit Port Klang Free Zone (PKFZ) fiasco.

KUALA LUMPUR: National Film Development Corporation of Malaysia (Finas) denies it delaying the release of a documentary on Malaysia’s first Prime Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj as claimed by film maker Mansor Puteh.

A Finas spokesman told The Malay Mail yesterday that the reviewing process is all part of procedure.

“We are not trying to butcher the product or anything like that. We are just trying to determine how to make it better.

“Currently, the documentary is being scrutinised by our reviewing panel, but this is all part of the process.”

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission says it does not have to start fresh investigations into past cases as the Nov 19 ruling by the High Court is not retrospective.

"Whatever new developments, as ruled by the court, will take place from the date of the ruling," said a spokesman.

He said there was no possibility of statements taken from witnesses after-office hours in the last three years being declared null and void.
