MIC Youth leader T. Mohan now wants Umno to take disciplinary action against former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad since the Pahang delegate who made the disparaging remarks against Dr Mahathir has been suspended.

Mohan said neither he nor the party condoned the “garland of slippers” suggested by Peter Sugumaran of the MIC Paya Besar division in Pahang.

However, the Youth wing feels the former prime minister should not have interfered in the internal affairs of the MIC, he said.

“Much as both the party and I hold Dr Mahathir in high esteem, action should be taken against him by Umno for interfering in the affairs of the MIC.”

Mohan said Dr Mahathir should not have hit out against party president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu when a tight fight for the MIC positions was around the corner.

He said statements made by the influential Dr Mahathir were uncalled for and had upset members who viewed them as a move to oust Samy Vellu.

He said it was not the first time during precarious moments that Dr Mahathir had done so. “MIC members have not forgotten Dr Mahathir’s statement just two days before the 2008 general election when he condemned the party president for not having done anything for the Indian community.

“Although the MIC candidates lost in most of the constituencies, the MIC members tolerated and refrained from making any counter-attack on Dr Mahathir for his accusations.”

Mohan was elaborating on his statement to Samy Vellu-owned Tamil Nesan daily yesterday. He said while he had discouraged the suspended delegate, Peter Sugumaran, from making the proposal during his speech on the presidential debate on Sunday, MIC delegates had the right to criticise Dr Mahathir or anyone who intervened in “our internal matters”.

Dr Mahathir had given his views on the MIC, Samy Vellu and endorsed Datuk S. Subramaniam as the deputy president of the party and the one to regain Indian support for the Barisan Nasional.

This angered several MIC members who rushed to the defence of Samy Vellu, including Sugumaran who mentioned in his speech on the presidential debate that a garland of slippers be placed on the portrait of Dr Mahathir at PWTC, home of Umno.

Umno leaders hit back, describing the “garland of slippers” suggestion as rude, excessive and extreme.
Samy Vellu first criticised the former premier for interfering in internal party matters, but said that he had been against the garland suggestion and would take disciplinary action against the delegate.

Asked if the MIC would issue a personal apology to Dr Mahathir as Umno leaders have taken umbrage over the remark and have demanded a personal apology from Samy Vellu, Mohan said: “It’s up to the individual to apologise.”

He said he hoped the storm would blow over despite the conflicts over comments made by other MIC leaders responding to the demand for a personal apology.

Asked if his comments would worsen the situation, Mohan said: "We have to stand our ground. We can’t keep quiet just because he was the former prime minister.”

Comments

Mohan, who are you to suggest that UMNO takes action against Tun Mahathir? Do you even know the difference between the right to criticise and to hurl insults? If you don't, please resign from politics. Malaysia doesn't need you. No one is denying the people's right to criticise anyone. But do not insult others, especially someone like Tun Mahathir. I'm sure you know what his contributions are. If you don't, please do undertake some research. Please do not say anything more before you become next after Sugumaran and Samy Vellu to apologise to Tun Mahathir. Tun Mahathir is a leader who can pressure a sitting PM to resign. Do you think UMNO will take up your suggestion? Answer that question yourself.

Just in regards to your statement "Do you even know the difference between the right to criticise and to hurl insults? If you don't, please resign from politics." Well, many should have resigned if your statement applies. Remeber the insults about women in Parliment? P. Sugumaran is not the first and will not be the last to insult on the political front...... but with due respect to Tun Mahathir, it is not necessary a good thing if a former PM can pressure a sitting PM to resign as mentioned in your comment.

TDM compare to T.Mohan or even DSSV.....not match....TDM told BN will lost in 2008 GE and that did happen...this old man has alot of experience and knowledge...Even i don't like him..but i respect him as a wise guy....he did a lot to this country and at least he has a brain...So when he talked..he knw what he said and instead of attacking him MIC should visit him and get his view and opinion..no harm...Even if UMNO suspend TDM...do you think TDM care....do you think he will stop talking......even during Pak Lah...he fight alone..and again he succeed.....he has nothing to lose....

T Mohan is trying to sell up his name with this stupid statement. They Matcha, if what Tun said is wrong, Samy Vellu will win at Sg Siput. and by the way when he give comment about MIC or Samy Vellu, he is not using a bad word or make them looks down grade like what this Peter "selipar" Sugumaran use. not even professional.

MIC Youth leader T. Mohan wants UMNO to take action against Dr.M? Remind me of Saddam Hussein when he wanted the UN to take action on the US sometimes ago. If only the MIC is popular as the Hindraf.

There is no need to act against TUN. he did not do anything wrong as he was giving a legitimate statement. I believe lots of us out there will agree with Tun's statement on Samy. Thanks

I'm not a member of MIC nor a sympathiser of it. But after reading this article, i can see a small light at the end of the tunnel for MIC. At last, the leaders have spines on their back. To tell what's on the mind of indian youths without fear. Why is it only UMNO has the monopoly to talk their mind? Others just have to shut up and dance to their tune only. I fully support the idea for Tun Mahathir to: a) apologise to MIC for intefering in its internal affairs. This is in line with what he used to espouse when he was the BN chairman i.e. non-interference into other party's matters. b) be hauled-up by the UMNO or BN disciplinary commitee for his uncalled-for remarks. Pity Tun. What one sows, he'll reap it in due time. And for the other spine-less politicians, mind your own business. Get your party in order. Why isn't your party president giving you a KPI? Dont you all need to get back the Malay support? So when is DS Najib going to suspend Tun M? And when is he going take Tun M to meet DS Samy and apologise?

Just because I'm non indian niether nor a MIC member, I can't give comment/view pertaining to MIC or its dictator. All the incidents in happened in front of my eyes...i can see, i have brain to think,i have ears to hear my indian friends dissaticfactions and mouth to voice my opinion,. Hello Samy you just want to stamp a record the longest serving president, the most longest serving dictator and the longest serving president with no seat in parliment.

Umno, Tun Mahathir etc have every right to voice out on what/who are holding back the coalition.

"So when is DS Najib going to suspend Tun M?" ANSWER: When Tun Mahathir does things that are negative to the BN and Umno. So far, Tun had not done this

"And when is he going take Tun M to meet DS Samy and apologise?" Why should Najib apologise to Samy??... And why would he take Tun Mahathir to meet Samy for?? Both Najib and Mahathir have better things to do. The better question should be: When are Samy Vellu and the MIC deadwoods going to look at themsleves in the mirror and be man enough to admit that it is THEY who are the major cause of ordinary Indians abandoning the BN?

Wow..wow..wow. Whats going on in BN?????? Our Prime Minister is going all out to promote 1Malaysia for the rakyat but its the opposite within BN. Who is UMNO,MIC and MCA????? Aren't they called BN? Aren't they the ruling goverment who is actively promoting 1Malaysia.....If BN cannot stay united how will the Rakyat fulfill the goal of 1Malaysia. In a team there is always misunderstanding...but its up to the leaders to sit down and settle the issue within them and not letting it out to stir racial disharmony. What is the difference between BN and PR? PR is having they issue of not being united...so be it! They are having internal issues with PAS, DAP and PKR.....is it going to be same for BN. A small suggestion to our beloved Prime Minister...I love your Idea of 1Malaysia and I believe this vision will carry Malaysia forward but I also think 1Malaysia should be enforce within BN before applying it to the Rakyat. Make 1Malaysia part of BN's KPI.

Hallo T Mohan! Dr M is a statesman lah. He will crtiicise everyone.. be it Umno, MCA or MIC. He is not a politician who is afraid of any political ramifications. He is an elder statesman who will tell what is bad or what is good no matter what they are and who they are. Why must Umno discipline him? Get real lah. Umno never discipline him even when Tun had badly criticise Najib and Pak Lah. A statesman never retires from doing what's good for the country. Retirement is only for selfish politicians. Thank you. James W.
