Angry parent punches teacher

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009 08:30:00
A TEACHER has lodged a police report alleging that he was punched by a parent after news of the collapsed suspension bridge spread around Kampar.

He made the report at the Kuala Dipang police station.

Hundreds of parents converged on Sekolah Kebangsaan Kuala Dipang  after the suspension bridge at the 1Malaysia Co-curriculum Centre collapsed around 10.40pm.

Initial reports had it that 22 pupils had drowned in the Kampar River.

Kampar police chief Supt Abdul Aziz Salleh said the male teacher was one of the teachers supervising pupils taking part in the activities organised at the centre by the Kinta Selatan District Education Department.

Abdul Aziz said apart from Fire and Rescue Department, police and Rela, Royal Malaysian Navy divers were brought in to assist in the search and rescue operations.

He said rescuers were concentrating their efforts up to several kilometres downriver, especially around the Tronoh Mines area where debris traps are located.

The body of the first victim, Dina Deve Nathan,11, was found by rescuers at 8.40pm about 2km from the collapsed bridge.

Politicians visit site of tragedy

ROYAL CONCERN: Raja Nazrin accompanied by Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir at the scene of the collapsed suspension bridge

Apart from the throngs of curious  the tragedy became the focal point of politicians — from both sides of the divide.

Shortly after the 10.40pm incident, Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir came to the scene. Initial reports that 22 pupils had drowned must have prompted the menteri besar to visit the scene himself.

The Malay Mail was informed that the menteri besar consoled distraught parents who rushed to the 1Malaysia Co-Curriculum Centre in Kuala Dipang, Kampar, located some 20km from the State capital, Ipoh.

In the morning, Zambry returned to Kuala Dipang to accompany Deputy Prime Minister and Education Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

In the afternoon, former Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamnad Nizar  amaluddin also visited the scene.

He later returned  accompanied by Penang Chief Minister  Lim Guan Eng and several DAP Members of Parliament.

Apart from the politicians, Perak Regent Raja Nazrin Shah also came to the scene. He was briefed by police and Fire and Rescue Department officials supervising the search for the two missing pupils.

What a freak, contractor deserves to be punished. Dont tell us what Engineering feat for Malaysia means. We had build bridges to aclaim world class status. Surely, one must know where foundations should be laid and suspension bridge should withstand heavier load and shakes. And? what does the contractor means he hadiahkan the bridge. What if is his kid was lost in the tragedy? Will he deny the fact? Syabas Tan Sri for your quick response

It is sad. Those 22 children. My sympathy for their parents. It is time we seriously think about what we do. We Malaysians' tidak apa mentality have taken many lives... how many more?

My heart goes out to the affected parents and my condolences to them. Perhaps, the 'tidak apa' mentality plays a major part in this tragedy. Most of all, do we learn the lesson from these past incidents. We all know human have short memory and before we know it, we would have forgotten all about this tragedy. What I like to get at is what sort of lesson do we learn from these incidents and how we could address them to prevent similar incidents from happening. Hauling up the responsible parties is a good start and made them accountable for the oversight and the negligence in this incident. Maybe we can send a message to those who are decision-makers are held to a higher standard and they are to ensure these public works are good and safe for the public. Even though I am cynical towards the government servants but I believe we should knock some sense into them that public lives and properties are at risk if they failed to live up to their duty to serve the Malaysia public.

Who is to blame? The builder or The School or the organizer of 1Malaysia camp? Let start with the builder, Its a done on good fate at no charge (FOC) since the earlier bridge had to be replace due to aging. I am sure there is someone who design the replacement bridge it. Should he be blame too? Was there a flaw on the design? That bridge is meant for student to cross over the river. But then, would the designer expected a group of students weight a like elephants cross over all at the same time with report that some of them jumping up & down on the bridge? The builder fault on not following the spec of the design? Perhaps they had? Who do you blame then? The School? Is the School has proper lighting for night event for the surrounding area incl the bridge? If no, why held the event in the first place? Why organize the event then? For unity? Are you saying that these children aren't united one another race if these kind of event are not held? These are just children at the peak of their childhood doing what is they are best at Play & Study!!! Not unity programs. They are united during classroom daily not just a overnight camp. What the point having these event, that in the end cause alot of sadness' to the family of the children that died & the others which are missing? Meanwhile the rest of the children which had witness it the incident (some of them) maybe be scare for life? Anyone willing to admit & take reasonability? Lastly, my condolences to the family(s) concern.

Building a suspension bridge is no engineering feat! Many bridges had been built since days gone by are still standing strong right up till today with proper maintenance. So what has happened to our Malaysian engineering works these days? Everything we (Malaysians) built today has flaws, from highway flyovers and now to a simple suspension bridge! Maybe due to shody works, design and sub-standard materials. WHY??? Most Malaysians have the answer, even government officials know why and this has gone on too long. Time we ignorant Malaysians wake up to reality and improve the situation or else we be the laughing stock of the world.

Schools have good intention is conducting the program which is to to mingle students among races and to broaden up minds of our future leaders. I'm one of the proud product from governments school which has attends many campings and activities during my primary and secondary school.Even during my study in university, I've take part in mountain hiking. But I see nothing wrong with the activities. It has make me healthier and make me more mature. Accidents do happen..not just at programme held by school or government. As the malay proverb says 'Malang tidak berbau'.
