Wanita MCA calls for CC members to quit, make way for new party poll
THE Wanita MCA central committee (CC) today resolved to urge all the party's central committee members to quit their posts to allow for new elections to be held.
The decision was reached at the Wanita CC meeting held at Wisma MCA here at 10am on Sunday and ended six hours later.
Wanita MCA chief Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun said the decision would be brought to the party's CC meeting on Tuesday.
"Following deliberations on the events after the EGM (extraordinary general meeting) on Oct 10, the current situation and recent requisition for fresh party elections by 16 MCA CC members, the Wanita MCA CC proposes en bloc resignation of the MCA CC to pave the way for new party elections to resolve the current
impasse," she said after chairing the Wanita meeting.
Also present were Wanita MCA secretary-general, Senator Heng Seai Kie, who is also Deputy Minister of Information Communication and Culture.
Chew, who is also Women, Family and Community Development Deputy Minister, was confident that this way, MCA's integrity could be saved and the party could move on.
She said at the meeting, the Wanita CC members also unanimously agreed that the decisions made at the EGM on Oct 10 and the party constitution be respected, and that "no one should be allowed or perceived to be above the decisions of the EGM".
On Thursday, 16 CC members including Chew, party vice-president Tan Kok Hon and Youth chief Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong called for new elections to be held and followed up with a formal request for an EGM to be convened.
According to the party constitution, an EGM could be requisitioned via the party president's directive, or if one-third of the CC members or one-third of the central delegates asked for it.
In another development, Chew said today's meeting also discussed the P1 WiMAX (wireless Broadband Internet service) television commercial, which was found to be lewed because of the suggestive body language and use of the word "potong" by the actors in the commercial.
"We will discuss with the company involved and ask that it withdraw the advertisement. If the company refuses, Wanita MCA will call on women to boycott the service."
Also discussed at the meeting was the idea of one-stream schools which had been proposed by various quarters, including historian and academician Prof Emeritus Tan Sri Khoo Kay Kim, recently.
"We agree with the prime minister's opinion that any move concerning it would take into consideration the views of the people. Wanita MC also upholds the principle that the people have the right to learn their mother tongue as stipulated in the Federal Constitution," Chew said.
