SHOCKED: Airbag theft victim Ivan Tan made a police report after finding the airbags missing

SHOCK and surprise — that was what civil engineering student Ivan Tan, 21, felt when he got into his Myvi one morning, only to realise both the front airbag fittings — in the dashboard and at the steering wheel — were gone!

Recounting his experience to Malay Mail, he said: “I remember parking my car at about 8pm on the second level of my condominium, Platinium Lake Condo PV10, Danau Kota Setapak, on Sept 17.

“But when I came back at about 8am the next day, I didn’t suspect anything when I found my car unlocked when using the remote control.

“I thought I had not locked my car earlier. But, when I checked my car, I was shocked to find a gaping hole at my steering wheel and dashboard, where the two airbags used to be.

STOLEN: The airbag installed in the steering wheel was missing

“The weird thing was that the thief didn’t even take some other expensive stuff I had in the car and only took some coins,” he said.

“The worse thing was, when I made a complaint to the condominium management, I met two others whose Myvi airbags were stolen too!”

Ivan subsequently made a police report at the Setapak police station.

“People I met at the police station even showed me how easy it was to open the car,” said Tan.

Tan subsequently claimed from the insurance firm for his losses.

Comments

I have no problem with the insurance company paying for the losses but I have a big problem with these insurance companies when they take out their anger on old cars going for 3rd party insurance by charging 100%-200% overloading on the premiums. Fact is, old cars don't get stolen and don't or seldom get involved in accidents. So why the overloading? Just because they are old cars? It's like kicking the poor cat when you come home from a lousy day in the office....yes, the poor cat because owners of old cars are poor people. Damn these insurance companies and damn bank negara for doing nothing about it at all..... JPJ, just waive insurance on old cars if these insurance companies are not interested. We just pay the road tax and all will be happy; win win.
