BEVY OF BEAUTIES: The finalists dazzling the crowd at The Mist, Bangsar

Malaysian girls are hot, and it’s not because of the weather. There are quite a number of beauty pageants and online modelling competitions that sprouted up recently. Modelle Magazine has a vibrant one on Facebook as well as an ongoing SMS voting campaign.

One of the most recent modelling competitions to conclude last week was Broadwalk Modeling Academy Online Pageant.

We’re doing it online-based because our target market is there,” said Broadwalk Modelling Academy marketing manager Ray Tan.

The finals/gala night was held at The Mist in Bangsar. Marcia Tan (left), 19, clinched the top prize and was crowned Broadwalk Modeling Academy Online Pageant Winner that night.

“My friends helped me a lot,” gushed Tan. “They voted and campaigned for me, so I owe it all to them!”

Marcia is a student at Help Institute, studying accounting and finance. She also models for TV commercials in Singapore and Thailand, doing some work for Pizza Hut.

This future ‘financial person’ still would like to do more freelance modelling and believes the competition has been good.

She also managed to learn some skills from the competition.

“I learned how to talk to different people, and they taught us about confidence, which is important.

“I like modelling because like the attention. Doesn’t everyone? don’t do car magazines though,” said Tan.
Fellow contestant Mayc Cheah, on the other hand, loves the motoring world.

“I love car magazines! And love cars!”

Her favourite?

“I like the SLK,” said the 19-year-old.

Well, with consistent modelling jobs, she can possibly afford one herself, but she needs to pass her exams first!

Cheah is sitting for her STPM this month, but still went for the competition.

“I can manage my time and do both things,” she assured everyone.

The girls were rounded up starting with the first selection in August. Throngs applied via online, but only the top 100 made the cut.

Stage One voting (Sept 8 to 21) saw the pool dwindle to just 30, after fans voted for their favourites based on the pictures taken by Broadwalk.

Stage Two voting (Sept 25 to Oct 4) eliminated 20 more girls before the top 10 was finally revealed.
The final voting stage was held online from Oct 16 to 26.

In the end, the finals at The Mist saw Tan clinching the top prize(full results in sidebar).

Cheah won the Mist Babe Hunt Catwalk title while Mitra Goh, 20, clinched the Miss Photogenic
subsidiary title, based on online votes.

In total, each of the top three received around 3,000 votes each with the others getting around 1,000 votes.
“I  ope to use the experience and skills learned from the competition to do some modelling, as well as to help me achieve my dreams with my band,” Mitra said. She is a member of a Celtic band – The Mythmakers – and hopes to some day make it as a performer.

All in all, it was a fun night out for everyone. The girls seemed a bit dazed and exhausted from their long journey – two months is no joke.

Yet, more and more girls seem to be entering these online model competitions and beauty pageants. Which means that there is no shortage of dreamers, as well as beautiful people in Malaysia.

“We’re going to do this on a quarterly basis,” said Ray Tan. “It’s been extremely encouraging.”
