Santokh Singh hospitalised

SOCCER legend Santokh Singh has been hospitalised since early this week due to a medical condition.

It remains unknown to what has befallen Santokh, 57, as streams of family members and friends have been visiting him at the Intensive Care Unit in KL Hospital.

Among those who visited Santokh yesterday included former internationals Datuk Soh Chin Aun, Datuk M. Chandran, national coach K. Rajagobal and childhood friend Reduan Abdullah.

"Santokh is my 'kampung' (Setapak) boy. We all grew up together and he refers to my mother as his mother, as our mothers are good friends," said Rajagobal.

"It's a shame to see him in such a condition. For all that he has done for the country and for the man he is, I pray he gets well soon."

An instrumental defender, Santokh first represented Selangor in the Burnley Cup in 1971 and played for the senior squad a year later.

In 1973, then national coach M. Kuppan roped Santokh into the national stable for the Jakarta Independence Cup (Piala Merdeka Jakarta) and aided Malaysia to create history by netting the 1974 Asian Games bronze medal in Tehran, Iran.

He was also part of the team that qualified for the 1980 Moscow Olympics but failed to see action in Russia after the government decided to boycott the Games.

Santokh quit Selangor in 1985 but has been playing in several veteran matches in and outside the country since.

Our prayers are with Santokh and we at Malay Mail wish him a speedy recovery.

A true sportsman and an ambassador for Malaysia whose courage has brought Malaysian Football Team to an international level and has done his nation proud. As a Malaysian its a shame to see the Malaysian Football arena today to where it is compare to as far as 30 years ago. I remember you talking to us about the golden moment when Malaysia at one moment was as compatible to the English Premier Leauge and many other leading countries. Japan for example whose Cup is just a mere 12 years or so can qualify for the World Cup, but Malaysia is yet to set its pase just to qualify for the Asian Leauge. What the Malaysian team has set as a Benchmark years along the road should have been followed-up with progress but now has been tarnished and sickened the people with the redtape in the Malysian Football arena. This subsequently has created the people who once aspired to watch MALAYSIAN FOOTBALL now has diverted to the English Premier Leauge. I thank Vaheguru for your condition at present. Our lord creator (Vaheguru) always blesses his true followers the compassionate holy hands of Sri Guru Nanak Sahib similarly move forward on the head of a true aspirant, believer, devout, faithful and blessed. Good day and a very heartfelt thanks to all Malay Mail readers and the ones who have posted comments. This coming from the daughter of the Malaysian Football Player Santokh Singh. Would like to inform all of you that Mr. Santokh is doing well and is stable but unable to talk as he is still under the care of the good folks of ICU at GH. There has been many rumours going about what happened and just to clear the air he had epileptic attacks due to viral infection. Would like to thank the many friends and family members who have visited him and thanks for all the prayers. It's not about the titles but its maily about how much the man has done for the country. Till today when you talk about football you mention the unsungheroes who have done Malaysia proud. Our Malaysian team are doing their best and all we need are supporters to boost their morale. Thank you once again for the well wishes, my dad knows that he has many fans and what's making him strong is the support and encouragment that each and every one of you have been giving.

I am sorry to hear about Santokh.I met santokh for the first time about 9 years ago in Port Dickson, when he was working for the TNB , I believe. It was quite accidental, as I was visiting the Sikh Gurduara at Port Dickson with my family on holidays, I bumped into Santokh's wife who happens to be from my home town.As we talked, Santokh came along and was introduced tyo us.He then insisted we all go to his house; but as we politely expressed our inability; he persisted then we have some drinks at the nearby coffeeshop. He was very hospitable and warm in being the host.Incidentally, it then transpired his father a Sikh priest from Alor Star was a friend of my father. For someone who we just met, one could not have found someone as warm and hospitable as Santokh. My family and I say our Ardas for his speedy recovery and good health and rejoining his family.
