GROOVES: For your hearing pleasure

Lambert
Adam Lambert should have won American Idol. That was what a lot of people were probably thinking during the show’s eighth season finale. However, a lot more felt that Kris Allen deserved the title as well as a career in the music industry, and spoke with their votes.

It’s all academic now, as both stars are on the right track. Lambert is finally releasing his debut effort this week. Now we can see whether or not America — or the world for that matter — would really go for Allen or Lambert.

Allen defeated Lambert in the competition, which saw 100 million votes cast. We shall see if those numbers can translate to album sales. Let’s have a look at the contenders for Allen vs Lambert 2.

With his out-of-this-world vocal range and unique musical style, Lambert is the ultra-glam, rock superstar that has America hooked. On Monday, Lambert unleashed one of the most highly anticipated debut albums, For Your Entertainment, on 19 Recordings/RCA (Sony Music).

The record garnered contributions from such innovative artistes as Lady Gaga, Pink, Justin Hawkins (formerly of The Darkness) and Rivers Cuomo of Weezer.

Lambert introduced his first single on Ryan Seacrest’s radio show on Oct 30. For Your Entertainment was written by Claude Kelly (Circus by Britney Spears) and Dr Luke (I Kissed A Girl by Katy Perry, Girlfriend by Avril Lavigne, Right Round by Flo Rida, along with multiple singles by Kelly Clarkson) and produced by Dr Luke.

“I feel so lucky to have been granted the true opportunity to work with some of the top producers and writers in popular music,” said Lambert.

“This album is a reflection of their genius and the collaborative energy that they were gracious enough to share with me.”

The credits on Lambert’s first album read like a list of the hottest artistes in the music business. Lady Gaga, long cited as a major influence by Lambert, co-wrote the track Fever with producer Jeff Bhasker. Pink along with Sweden’s Max Martin and Johan Shellback co-wrote Whataya Want From Me. Matthew Bellamy, of the British prog rock/electronica band Muse, one of Lambert’s favourite groups, wrote Soaked.

Lambert co-wrote four of the songs on his album. In addition to Pick U Up, Lambert penned Strut with Greg Wells and American Idol judge Kara DioGuardi; Aftermath with Alisan Porter, Ferras and Ely Rise; and Broken Open with Wells and Evan Bogart (whose credits include S.O.S. by Rihanna and Jai Ho! (You Are My Destiny) from Slumdog Millionaire).

Four of the tracks on the album are produced by Rob Cavallo, who has worked with Green Day, MCR, David Cook, Alanis Morisette, Jewel and Dave Matthews Band.

Lambert sang the title track on television for the first time on the American Music Awards on Sunday, Nov 22.
