Let good sense prevail, give peace a chance, say MCA leaders

KUALA LUMPUR: MCA's internal feud does not seem to have simmered down, despite the call by Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin — who is also deputy Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman — for the feud to be ended by Dec 1.

Party vice-president Datuk Liow Tiong Lai and his group are still pushing for an extraordinary general meeting on Saturday, in the absence of a date being set for fresh party elections.

MCA president Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat and deputy president Datuk Seri Chua Soi Lek had agreed to fresh party polls but have yet to agree on the date.

Although all the feuding factions agreed to fresh polls as the only way to resolve the problem, the date of the polls has now become the prickly issue.

Meanwhile, a party central committee member, Wong Hock Aun, called for "good sense" to prevail in the wake of challenges facing the party and BN.

"Let's give the peace plan or the unity plan time to work. We have to be level-headed and work towards unity.

"The grassroots are now calling for an end to the feud as fast as possible. Let's not waste our energy and effort in fighting as we are supposed to serve the rakyat, not just ourselves. I hope all involved will open a new chapter and begin doing productive work for the rakyat," said Wong.

Another central committee member, Datuk Ti Leng Ker, said all those involved should not behave like spoilt brats.

"We are leaders and as such, we bring goodwill and trust. We are also law and policy makers and as such, good sense should prevail.

"Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and the Deputy Prime Minister had intervened and all sides had agreed to fresh elections. We should not undermine and belittle the standing of the prime minister and deputy prime minister.

"This is part and parcel of discipline and organisational structure. Some space should be given to promote future cooperation as we are all comrades-in-arms.

"Enough damage had been done to the party and enough mockery and disregard for rules and discipline had been done. We need to focus a lot of effort and work to repair the damage.

"It saddens me that personal agendas have been placed above the party's," Ti said.

Comments

MCA should proceed with the proposal of a direct election including for Youth and Wanita in June or October next year. Ignore Liow and Gang's call for an EGM this weekend as the turnout will be minimal because MCA has termed it as illegal. Since this is an illegal assembly perhaps the proper authority should look into the possibility of putting the illegal organizers into Lock-up (ISA). Liow and Gang are just trying to get rid of OTK/CSL.This is a mutiny and I am sure MCA do not want this to happen as OTK/CSL were legally elected. If this happens now it will happen again. There will be no end.
