WELL DONE: Policeman sizing up the robbery scene at Sunway GombakHero

GOMBAK: He may be a hero cop to others but Lance-Corporal Husnizaim Abdul Wahab describes his exploits in foiling an attempted robbery at a petrol station yesterday morning as “just another day on the beat”.

Fighting shy of even having his picture taken, this policeman from Bukit Aman Highway Patrol said he stopped at the place in Sunway Gombak about 9am to fill up his car while on his way home.

He noticed a commotion inside the station and rushed in to confront the robbers.

Instincts ingrained from the police academy training kicked in and he stepped up to stop the robbery attempt even though he had just finished his shift.

“I felt it was my responsibility to stop crime.

“And I guess I was at the right place at the right time.”

He said it was fortunate that the two would-be robbers — armed with a samurai sword, a short dagger, parang and two toy guns — were eventually subdued. It is learnt that the suspects — aged 21 and 24 — could have been attempting their first robbery.

A policeman for the past 11 years, Husnizaim scuffled with one of the robbers who tried to stab him with a dagger.

He then opened fire and brought the robbery attempt to an end.

“The situation was quite tense. They were shocked to find out that I was a policeman.

“I asked them to surrender but they resisted until I fired the shot in self-defence.”

The shot hit one of the suspects in the ribs. On seeing this, the other robber surrendered. The injured robber was rushed to the Selayang Hospital where his condition was reported as stable.

In spite of his brave and timely crime intervention, Husnizaim, a father-of-two, remained calm yet upbeat.
“I did what I did as something that came naturally. It is my job to protect the people.”

However, a petrol station attendant, who chose to be known simply as “Tok Cik”, said the situation could have turned uglier if the policeman was not at the scene.

“Had I been all alone, the robbers would have fled with the day’s collection and I could have been injured in trying to stop them. I guess this was my lucky day.”

In his three years at the petrol station, he said this was the first time he was held up in a robbery attempt.

“I wanted to stop it, since this was the second time this petrol station was robbed.

“I wasn’t thinking of anything when I tried to stop them. Luckily, the policeman came in.”

In follow-up operations, police detained two more suspects, aged 23 and 27, believed to be accomplices.
They were picked up at a house in Taman Selayang.

They also seized 20 toy guns and three motorcycles with fake registration number plates.

Police are investigating whether the suspects were involved in other known robberies.

Lance-Corporal Husnizaim Abdul Wahab indeed deserves all the compliments and praises - he is indeed a rare jewel amongst our police force! This is indeed a show of service above self motto which is sadly missing in our police force nowadays. But on the flipside, I am wondering whether off duty police personnel are allowed to carry guns around? Luckily for the petrol kiosk and the public, Husni is an honest cop! What happens if the weapon had been used for other purposes or is accidentally dropped, stolen or lost (anjd picked up by other undesirable elements)?? Now, how would we know a person who is not in uniform and pointing a gun is a police officer or not and on official duty? I shudder to think of all the off duty police carrying guns around ...with some of them using the guns to "push their weight" around or worst still, commit crimes with them..not that it had not happened before!!!

Execellent act of duty of care topwards the public. But why is his face not in the papers and all over? This man acted in the way expected of all police and good citizens. If more of us acted in such manner and challeneg the robbers each time, Malaysia would be a safer place to live in.THIS man deserves a DATUKSHIP that I would not begrudge;unlike the handouts other less deserving individuals receive and then act as if they are demi gods!Shabasss!

anyone remember the story where the guard just stood there and do nothing while watching a girl cry because her house is in midst of robbery. Now this policeman was off duty but performed his duty nevertheless.Imagine the situation could have been worse since the petrol attendant trying to stop 2 armed robbers. My hat's off to him,he's really a hero.

This robbers have no qualm about killing and hurting people. If I am the policeman I would have shoot both of them. Anyway good work by this police officer. The police department should give him a reward.
