CELEBRITY SAGA: Tiger is only human after all...
THE Tiger Woods saga is a good reminder to everyone, sportsmen and all, that the fall from grace can be swift and painful.
One day, he was on top of the world and could do no wrong. The best golfer in the world – to some, the best ever – has been brought to his knees for what he called “transgressions” against his wife and family.
He has been compared to the great Jack Nicklaus, but now no matter how many majors he captures, he will never reach the stature of Jack, Arnold Palmer or the Black Knight, Gary Player. He will forever be remembered for the wrong reasons – and some golf.
It is quite amazing considering that as a golfer, he seemed to be from a different planet, more than a class above the rest.
He could do no wrong. Even if he treated the Press with disdain at times, they still tagged along with him.
Now, all that is falling apart all because of his off-the-green activities. He had kept his life so private that when details of them began to unravel, it shocked not only Americans but people all over the world.
True, what he did may be a private matter, but as a public figure, he had certain standards to live up to. He is not the first sportsman and will certainly not be the last to be linked to sex scandals.
And so the circus goes on as the media and bloggers probe his private life, uncovering more of his hidden conquests, which numbered 10 at the last count. Sleazy news sells and with Woods as the star, it can only get worse or better, depending on which side you are on.
After all this, it is time to move on. Enough has been said, give the man a break. What Tiger did is inexcusable but life has to go on.
Perhaps the media fails to realise that the people hurt most by this whole episode is his wife, children and the rest of his family. Give them a break too.
