Choong Hann hoping for a Thomas Cup final fling
KUALA LUMPUR: National player Wong Choong Hann is keen to play for the nation in the Thomas Cup when Malaysia host the prestigious event from May 9-16 next year.
Ranked 14th in the world, Choong Hann would love to play in a big championship like the Thomas Cup in front of the home crowd before hanging up his racket.
He represented Malaysia in the 2008 Beijing Olympics and this year’s world championship in India. Based on his recent performances, he looks a good bet to book one of the three Malaysian singles slots.
With six Thomas Cup campaigns up his sleeves, Choong Hann emerged runnerup to world No 1, Lee Chong Wei in the final of the Macau Open but swept past China’s Chen Jin and Indonesian Taufik Hidayat in Macau and Taiwan Open respectively.
“I am 32-years-old and I feel I can play active badminton for another two years. The Thomas Cup is a coveted and historic championship and winning it for Malaysia would be an icing on the cake in my career,” said Choong Hann.
He is now an independent player and currently attached with a German badminton club – Empor Brandenburger Tor (EBT) in Berlin.
