No lifting of freeze on Indonesian maids
KUALA LUMPUR: The year is coming to an end and there is still no indication whether Indonesia will lift the freeze it imposed on its women leaving for Malaysia to work as domestic helpers.
Whether the Malaysian government meets its year-end deadline to resolve the issue is dependent on what the Indonesian government decides, the Human Resources Ministry says.
Its minister, Datuk Dr S. Subramaniam, said the two countries were still discussing the matter and that "nothing has been finalised yet".
Chances of a decision being reached before the year ends depends on Indonesia.
"That will be up to the Indonesian side if they are agreeable to what we are proposing. We are still discussing the issue.
"We wanted to finish the discussions by Dec 31. However, there still are certain issues that both countries cannot agree on," he said, referring to the joint Malaysia-Indonesia technical committee on foreign maids which has been tasked to seek a solution.
Dr Subramaniam said besides the meetings, the joint committee members had been in constant communication via email.
The next meeting of the committee will be held next year.
On June 25, Indonesia issued an order barring its women from going to Malaysia to work as domestic helpers following numerous cases of abuse by their Malaysian employers.
