Sani Express to compensate families of accident victims

KUALA LUMPUR: Sani Express Sdn Bhd has expressed its readiness to compensate families of the victims of the Ipoh South express bus tragedy.

Its chief executive officer Abu Bakar Mohammad said the company would provide an allocation to aid the families and would be contacting them soon.

He said the double-decker bus was in good condition when it left Klang for Kuala Perlis with 48 passengers at 9pm last night.

"The bus was well maintained and its speed limiter was set at 97km per hour and as such, it could not exceed the maximum speed," he said, adding that the bus data recorder showed that it was travelling at 91km per hour when the accident occurred.

Ten passengers were killed and two injured, one seriously, when a Sani Express bus skidded and hit the road divider as it was heading north at Km272.8 of the North-South Expressway, about 8km after the Ipoh Selatan toll plaza at 1am on Saturday.

The victims had been seated on the lower tier of the bus. The two drivers and the 36 other passengers were unhurt.

Asked whether Sani Express would take any action on the driver, he said it would wait for the police investigations before taking the next course of action.

Abu Bakar said the company's operation continued as usual.

Please note that it is safe driving techniques and etiquette that are desperately needed here and now. Enough lame excuses about poor road conditions or tired drivers. Drivers should not be allowed more than 2 hours at stretch. A co-driver MUST take over. It's about driving attitude. Money from overtime should not even be considered when the safety of passengers are of the utmost priority. It is high time for an overhaul. This is accident is such a crying shame.

It is not the shift hours or banning express bus from travelling at night. IT IS ABOUT the double decker bus which is not fit to be on the road. Double decker bus is only used in city areas in most western countries so that the speed of travel does compromise with safety of passenger. The height of the bus (gravity) is too DANGEROUS for long distance and at high speed. My recent experience was near Sg. Petani earlt this month, a double decker express bus is travelling at around 130km/h overtook me. The bus was travelling like floating in the air. The Transport Ministry and Commercial Vehicle Dept are to be BLAMED for allowing such companies using double decker buses.

suggestion : lets have 8 hrs shifts for the drivers instead of doing trips for hours till can give the lame answer " I SLEPT & KILLED THE PASSENGERS"... or to take a very serious action againts the driver so it could be a lesson for others. Jail sentences for years would be better and definately to cancel the drivers license forever to mk sure he nvr drives or even ride a motorbike.

Double decker buses are not stable for long distance high speed travelling especially if the drivers have no experience to handle such tall vehicle or they have no brain or both.

"91km per hour" for a bus and you call that safe?

they probably need the extra money to pay compensation & for possible lawsuit filed by the victims' next of kin. tho i don't believe anyone in the right frame of mind is going to board a sani express bus in the near future following this crash.
