Kuhan hails keeper Kumar

KUALA LUMPUR: Former national hockey captain S. Kuhan reckons that current national team custodian S. Kumar has what it takes to win the "Best Player" award which will be announced by the Asian Hockey Federation next year.

Kumar, who's been winning plaudits from coaches and players, has shown time and time again, that he is the safest keeper. On many occasions, he has almost single-handedly helped the national team win matches with some scintillating displays.

Kuhan, who played with Kumar in the national team and at club level, said although his compatriot did not enjoy the best of starts to his career with the national team, his drive to succeed at the top level is enviable.

"Kumar is one of the most consistent players the past three years. He is on top of his game. I remember the time when Pokok (Nasihin Nubli) was one of the best goalkeepers in Asia.

"Then, Roslan Jamaluddin came into the picture. So, it was very difficult for Kumar to break into the first team because the other custodians were class acts. Pokok along with Roslan probably got the nod because they had experience on their side.

"But Kumar is a model professional. He always held his faith and worked hard to get what he wants. He worked his way to where he is now. That's why I'm not surprised that some of the world's best coaches — like Paul Lissek (Germany) and Ric Charlesworth (Australia) — regard Kumar as one of the best goalkeepers in the world. That alone speaks volumes of the guy,” said Kuhan.

Kuhan, who is still playing for club side Sapura, said Kumar's only downfall is that he has yet to play in a "major" like the World Cup.

"That will come with time, I'm sure," Kuhan said. "He strives for excellence, and that sets him apart. This is why many other players look up to Kumar as a role model."
