DEVOTION: Muslims praying at the National Mosque

New Moon

RARE: New Year's blue moon

KUALA LUMPUR: While many across the world, including Malaysia, celebrated New Year in an eruption of cheers amidst bright fireworks displays, this boy (above) chose to celebrate it differently.

He was among the many Muslims who ushered in 2010 by performing the solat khusuf (lunar eclipse prayers) at midnight at the National Mosque.

The partial lunar eclipse, which took place from 1.17am to 5.28am, was observed when the moon started passing the umbra at 2.53am until the maximum phase at 3.24am.

A full moon occurs every 29.5 days, and most years have 12. On average, an extra full moon in a month — a blue moon — occurs every 2.5 years.

The last time there was a lunar double-take was in May 2007.

New Year's blue moons are rarer, occurring once in 19 years.

I hope every1 prays for the good of Malaysia in - corruption free governance - understanding and appreciation of mankind regardless of race, religion and creed - less racism esp from the mouth of half baked jaguh-kampong politicians - going back to the days when all Malaysians can mix freely and not having any sense of insecurity or chip on the shoulder and lastly, - for World Peace... *Amen*Amin*
