Demand for benefits by those in power can mean 'abuse'

PETALING JAYA: Lawyers for Yayasan Basmi Kemiskinan (YBK) are studying whether there are grounds to lodge a report with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) on the Selangor government's post-for-project demand.

YBK's lawyer Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Rahman told The Malay Mail yesterday: "At the moment, we are studying the case. Hopefully, within a week, we can come up with a decision."

Foundation chairman Datuk Zainal Abidin Sakom, had told a Press conference at YBK's office in Kelana Jaya last Friday that its lawyers had indicated that the foundation could, on grounds of "elements of abuse", take the matter up with the MACC.

Asked what was meant by "elements of abuse", Abdul Aziz said, "When someone is in power and demands something for themselves for their own benefit, it can be considered an element of abuse. That is why we are studying the matter issue before making a decision."

YBK's board of trustees will also meet to discuss whether to take civil action against the Selangor government.

Zainal had last Thursday refuted Batu Tiga assemblyman Rodziah Ismail's statement that the State government just wanted to add, and not replace, the trustees on the board.

He pointed out that the board could not have more than six members. It now has five.
