KUALA LUMPUR: It has been long since Wong Mew Choo made an impact in the international scene. The last time the she won a title was at the 2007 China Open.

Since then, Mew Choo had struggled - losing in early rounds. Some attributed her downturn to her knee injury, while others argue she has lost the plot.

Mew Choo, nevertheless, believes that she is not ready to throw in the towel and hopes to make an impact this year.

"I have no intentions of quitting for now. I know I am capable of achieving more. I have to work on my tactics to get back to my winning ways," said Mew Choo.

"I don’t think my injury is an issue. I feel fine even during long rallies. My biggest problem is reading my opponents' game plan and not able to wary my game. I must learn how to manipulate the situation and dictate the game," she said.

Mew Choo, fresh from her outing in the Korea Open, is all eager to get the best result in the Malaysia Open beginning tomorrow. In Korea, she gave second seeded Zhou Mi a tough fight before losing 10-21, 21-10, 21-11 in the first round.

"I don’t think I’m mentally weak. If that was the case, then I wouldn’t be able to reach this far in my career. "I admit I am inconsistent and really hope to sort this out soon."

Deep inside, Mew Choo hopes to score big in one of the major tournaments — namely the Asian Games and Commonwealth Games — this year.

"I rather not speak openly of my target. I’ve learnt that when I expect too much it doesn’t materialise but sometimes I surprise myself when I don’t place any target."

As for the Malaysia Open, Mew Choo is likely to play against sixth seed Lu Lan of China in the second round.

"I prefer taking one match at a time. There’s no point thinking beyond. Let’s see what happens in my first match on Wednesday," she added.
