Al Amin: Keen to promote e-commerce among Malaysian SMEs

KUALA LUMPUR: eBay and PayPal this morning signed an MoU with SME Corporations Malaysia to help small-and-medium enterprises (SME) in Malaysia leverage the global business opportunities that e-commerce brings.

The partnership is aimed at equipping SMEs with the knowledge needed to market their products internationally and gain a competitive advantage in the challenging economy.

This is the first time a government body in Malaysia is partnering with ebay, the world's largest online  marketplace with over 89 million active users and PayPal, a global leader in online payment with over 78 million
active accounts worldwide.

Prior to Malaysia, ebay had successfully launched similar programmes with the Foshan government in China as well as the Department of Industrial Promotion and the Department of Export Promotion in Thailand.

Chairman of SME Corp Malaysia, Datuk Mohamed Al Amin Abdul Majid said, taking cognisant of the needs for local SMEs to embark on online business activities, the signing ceremony this morning will be a start of a long and fruitful collaboration between SME Corp Malaysia, ebay and PayPal in their effort to increase the adoption of e-commerce among Malaysian SMEs.

Chief executive officer of ebay, greater China, Southeast Asia and Japan, Jeff Liao, said, by collaborating closely with SME Corp, they aim to supply the world with Malaysian products with respect of intellectual property right.

"With 15.8 million Internet users and e-commerce expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of over 28 per cent from 2006 to 2010, Malaysia has tremendous potential," Liao said.

PayPal Southeast Asia and India general manager, Mario Shiliashki, said, the partnership will stimulate Malaysia's export sector and accelerate e-commerce growth by enabling local businesses access to new markets and international buyers which can add to their bottomline profit.

To encourage SMEs to start selling on ebay, there will be a waiver of insertion fees for the first 100 ebay
listings and selected features, as well as up to 25 per cent discount on fees for the first 100 payment received via PayPal.
