A part of the entourage

Just like thousands of others, Ash Nair (right) decided to move to Hollywood to get closer to his dreams of being an actor.

Two years later, in 2009, he bagged a small role on the award winning HBO series Entourage.

The London lad had to go through a long and rigorous process before landing the small role on the series.

Auditions for the minor role saw close to 200 actors, but Nair was the one selected. On the set of Entourage, Nair said he felt like he was a 5-year-old in Disneyland.

Being fascinated with the filmmaking process, he watched the crew at work and saw how much effort and energy is used into making a single shot.

"Watching a crew of 50 or more setting up equipment, hundreds of background artistes and all the actors doing their jobs to serve a single vision is truly a remarkable sight," said Nair, who was pleasantly surprised that he had his own little trailer with his name on it.

While filming, he got a chance to meet the cast including Jerry Ferrara, Adrien Grenier, Kevin Connolly, and Jamie Lynn Sigler as well as the creator of the show, Doug Ellin.

"Initially I was excited and star-struck meeting the guys, as Entourage has always been my favourite show.

The feeling didn't go on for too long, because they were all down to earth," said Nair.

The 24-year-old first decided to pursue acting when he was working a dead end job. But after watching Leonardo Dicaprio's performance in What's Eating Gilbert Grape? Nair was inspired to pursue acting the very next day.

Although his parents were initially skeptical about his career path, they eventually decided to support his decision to study acting and move to Hollywood when they realised how much he wanted to act.

Wanting to be independent, Nair worked as a freelance artiste and waiter in Los Angeles while studying at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts for three years.

He also experimented in theatre landing a role as 'Skateboard Kid' in indie film Jenny Got A Boob Job.

"Entourage showed my parents that it is possible for me to make something of myself here, even though it was a very small role," Nair added.

While he looks for more roles in Hollywood, Nair hopes to visit Malaysia again.

"Going to Malaysia is like a break for my soul. I enjoy everything about it — the family over there, the places and obviously, the food. I wish I could find a good Nasi Lemak here, but unfortunately that is not possible," he said.

Catch Ash Nair and the rest of the cast of Entourage tonight at 9pm on Astro 411.
