A love drunk night
Good acts, a bizarre performance choice and many distractions from Boys Like Girls highlighted the night for the Nokia Comes with Music launch party last Friday at the Mont Kiara Equestrian Park.
One might think that a free party with Boys Like Girls would make their day but it was actually the local acts that fared slightly better.
Some parts of the screaming crowd that night might beg to differ, though. Hosted by the very drool-worthy VJ Utt, the night was considered predominantly focused on one act and one act only — Boys Like Girls.
Despite the interesting line up of local band — 6ixth Sense, winner for best song and best performance at the Anugerah Juara Lagu — Aizat, and Hong Kong’s latest singer-songwriter ‘It’ boy, Khalil Fong, you can hear the crowd chanting impatiently for Boys Like Girls between the acts.
While Fong had most of the boys and girls in the crowd mesmerised during his performance, 6ixth Sense and Aizat had the unfortunate experience of having the crowd distracted at times as Boys Like Girls appeared at the viewing room at the top of the stadium.
There were more than a couple of times when the crowd had turned from the stage to the viewing room instead with screams and cheers in the midst of a show.
Nevertheless, 6ixth Sense and Aizat gave a solid performance without batting an eyelid (especially Aizat, who blew us away with his performance of I Go).
While Boys Like Girls kept the crowd happy with their all-too-familiar songs and throwing some guitar picks into the crowd here and there, it was surprising to note that there was really nothing that stood out from their performance despite a decent rocker’s night out.
It was fun at the beginning with their cover of I Gotta Feeling + Love Drunk, but after a few songs, the rest of the performance felt like a repeat show.
During the fifth song, eyes lit up at the appearance of Misha Omar, supposedly to perform a duet — Two is Better Than One — with the band.
Appearing on stage with a microphone mishap, Misha was voiceless for a second. The next thing we knew, she was singing a line with lead vocalist Martin Johnson Before anyone could even grasp her presence, she disappeared from the stage, all within a span of 20 seconds. Many were left perplexed over her sudden retreat.
The crowd didn’t seem to mind as towards the end of the night, Johnson reached into the crowd ala Akon, getting everybody excited!
Fans within his reach were trying to grab him while band members busied themselves splashing water and throwing their towels into the midst, a feat quite reminiscent of what they did at the MTV World Stage in Sunway.
While the night ended with the crowd looking forward to more Boys Like Girls performance, perhaps more of Aizat and Khalil Fong headlining these events could be something to look forward to.
