SATISFYING: Splash of Happiness for One

Since 2010 is dubbed the Year of the Tiger, many would think that most seafood joints would offer an abundance of tiger prawns to celebrate the Chinese New Year.

Well, Manhattan Fish Market (MFM) on the other hand decided to do the opposite! They are bringing the fish in and giving the tiger a low profile especially with their new festive meals that feature cod fish.

Both meals come with Grilled Pacific Cod Fillet basted in Teriyaki Sauce with Black and White Sesame Seeds accompanied by Steamed Broccoli and Julienned Carrots.

The 'Splash of Happiness for One' which is obviously a meal for one person, is served on a bed of Garlic Butter Rice, while the 'Splash of Happiness for Two' also consists of the awardwinning Flaming Prawns Fried Calamari, Fried Oysters and Chips priced at RM38.80 and RM78.80 respectively.

HEAVENLY: Splash of Happiness for Two

In addition, both sets include Tomato Seafood Chowder for starters and unlimited refills of Coca-Cola throughout your meal.

However, if you are not a fan of cod, you can opt for the salmon and deduct RM5 from the price of the meals.

For those who do not celebrate Chinese New Year, why not take your loved ones or family and celebrate Valentine's Day which falls on the same day!

From Feb 8 to Feb 21, MFM will be offering a sharing platter with a Tiramisu Cake, two bowls of soup and two glasses of their refreshing Tropical Breeze drink for only RM88.00.

Plus, on Feb 14 only, Ang Pows will also be given to patrons who bring the coupons worth RM10 from selected publications and can be redeemed upon payment. You can grab the coupon from today's (Friday, Jan 5) edition of The Malay Mail!

So head on to MFM to celebrate Chinese New Year or Valentine's Day with sumptuous seafood and even if you do not celebrate these occasions, why not just enjoy a great meal with your friends and family.

Plenty of love from Croatia

A SPECIAL MENU: There are unique meals on Valentine's — Pic By Samsul Said

LOVEBIRDS looking to add some European flavour to their Valentine’s Day celebrations would do well with making a reservation at Dubrovnik.

Named after the southern Croatian city situated along the Adriatic Sea coast, this slick family-owned operation nestled in Solaris Mont Kiara is offering a special menu from Feb 9 to 14 for the big day (and to accommodate this year’s clash with Chinese New Year celebrations).

General manager Dina Djumic (her father Zoran Djumic is the head chef ) noted that newcomers to the Croatian fare offered at Dubrovnik are often pleasantly surprised by the experience.

“It’s nothing like what they expected, and they find that it’s actually quite approachable. We’ve received good feedback from our customers who like the traditional, home-made recipes and our emphasis on properly prepared fresh ingredients,” she said.

Croatian cuisine boasts a variety of flavours, thanks to Hungarian, Italian and Austrian influences as well as Mediterranean especially in the coastal regions.

The three course Valentine’s menu, at RM89++ per person, makes for a cozy meal. We recommend opting for the Prawns with Basil Tomato Sauce. The Fresh Grilled Prawns goes very well with the sauce for a light and refreshing start to the evening. Nonseafood lovers can have Quail Pate and Leek & Pumpkin Soup to start.

For the main course, we sampled the Chicken Stroganov, prepared Croatian-style with fresh seasonal vegetables and rice. The light tang to the rice coupled with the tender chicken and crunchy vegetables made for a hearty munch. Those not in the mood for chicken can opt for the Cod Romesco or Lamb Chop with Wild Mushroom and Spinach.

HEARTY: Strawbery Pavlova for the lovebirds

End the night with the dessert, a Strawberry Pavlova for two shaped into a heart for the occasion. The melt-in-your-mouth meringue layered with cream and topped off with sliced fresh strawberries boasts just the right level of sweetness accentuated by the strawberries.

But even for non-romantic occasions, the ala carte menu features quite a few gems. The must-try here is Peka, a signature Croatian dish that needs to be ordered in advance though during the weekends, if you’re lucky, they might just have some simmering in the kitchen.

The meat is cooked in a pan covered with an iron bell for two to three hours in a woodburning oven and the resulting meat is a tender affair with hints of herbs such as rosemary. You can choose either chicken or lamb.

Another must-try is Cevapi & Djuvedj, which is grilled minced lamb and beef sausage served with Croatian vegetable rice and spicy vegetable salsa. The salsa, made from capsicum, eggplant and tomatoes is a pleasant dip with a spicy tang.

The Malay Mail favourite from the menu has to be the Krumpir, which is a mushroom & potato soup. Boasting just the right amount of creaminess and given some body with potato cubes, the soup is made with three different types of mushrooms including Porcini mushrooms flown in from Croatia.

As for drinks, the establishment features a selection of Croatian wines. For non-alcoholic drinkers, do try the Blackberry Smoothie (a delightful and colourful experience). Or some Croatian tea which boasts fruity flavours such as the Apple and Cinnamon tea which made for a truly satisfying sip.
