KUALA LUMPUR: A police sergeant was killed while manning traffic at an accident scene after he was knocked down by a car believed to be driven by a man who was under the influence of alcohol.

The freak accident happened at Jalan Chan Sow Lin early yesterday morning when the sergeant, Harjit Singh, 50, from the Cheras police headquarters, was knocked down by a Hyundai Getz car driven by a man at about 3am.

According to Kuala Lumpur Police Chief Datuk Wira Muhammad Sabtu Osman, the driver was drunk and drove recklessly, when the accident happened.

He added that the 27-year-old driver tried to escape after the accident but police managed to detain him.

"During the incident, the victim and another policeman were involved in directing traffic after a six-car pile up in Jalan Chan Sow Lin when the car knocked into Harjit before colliding into another car," he told reporters after launching a crime prevention during 'Balik Kampung' campaign at Jalan Bukit Bintang here today.

Harjit, who died on the way to Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Hospital (HUKM), leaves behind his wife and three children aged between 13 and 24.

"The funeral is expected to be held on Monday," said Muhammad Sabtu.

there should be a law condemning drunk drivers with fatal consequence to death. the real issue is that when you are "MACHO" enough to drink, then you should also be "MAN" enough to bear the consequence. So when your drunk driving kill another human being who is a father or a son or a wife of somebody's else, i think you should be punished by death. There is no such thing as social drinking, having a good time never meant endangering other people's life.

i stopped drinking a long time ago, and i am still living my life to the fullest. alcohol is a lot worse than smoking, when there so many calls to ban smoking, why not alcoholic drinking. i think the saudi government has got this one right. I did not recall reading anyone get hit by a drunk driver in that country. for those travelling during the CNY, be extra careful. You never know a moronic drunk driver until it is just too late.

This is a very good opportunity for politicians, particularly from the opposing fence, to politicise this problem of drunken driving as a policeman has already lost his life, the wife lost a husband and the children lost their father! Where's the noisy Bar Council? Its the Bar Council and the anti federal government political parties that always say that the police is a tool of the federal government!

If the traffic laws are not enough, the family should take a civil case to put the drunken driver behind bars (for long long time) and make him bankrupt (and all his assets confisticated) at the same time. Only then these people will learn. It has been far too long (I hope the PM and all MPs are reading this) many innocent lives had been snatched just because our kempen keselamatan jalan raya tak boleh jalan. In addition, lives have been taken by mat rempit, mother's life gone because of snatch thieves, sleeping bus drivers and also motorcyclist fallen into pot holes! I think someone should use a civil suit against this type of drivers. I hope that the govt will allow this. :)
