SEREMBAN: Six people travelling in a car were burnt to death after it caught fire following an accident at Km252 of the North-South Expressway, near the Senawang toll plaza, about 1.30am today.

Negri Sembilan traffic chief Supt Junaidi Bujang told The Malay Mail this morning that the identities of the victims, who were burnt beyond recognition, could not be ascertained.

"We have yet to identify them. We cannot even confirm if they were related," he said when contacted at 11.30am today.

Junaidi said the identification documents of the victims could have been destroyed when fire razed the car.

"We appeal to those who have not heard from their family members or colleagues to come forward to assist in our investigations."

At Press time, no one had claimed the bodies at the Tuanku Ja'afar Hospital in Seremban.

Earlier, Bernama had quoted a police spokesman as saying that the six were trapped inside the ill-fated car that was believed to have gone out of control and crashed into a lorry parked on the shoulder of the expressway.

The impact of the accident set off an explosion in the car, causing its engine to be blown about 50 metres away from the scene of the crash. It was later found in a drain.

"The car may have been driven fast and the driver could have lost control before hitting the parked lorry, a trailer, that was laden with what is believed to be granite powder. The lorry had broken down yesterday afternoon," the spokesman told reporters

A witness, Rashid Razali, 38, who lives in Taman Seremban Selatan, about 150m from the expressway, said he was washing his car when he heard a loud explosion.

"After the explosion, I saw a fire. A few neighbours and I rushed to the expressway to investigate and saw the smoking car," he said .

"We tried to get closer to the burning car but moved away when there was a second explosion. The fire was very intense and the car was a total wreck due to the impact."

Firemen from the Seremban 2 and Senawang Fire and Rescue Department, who arrived in three fire engines, took about three hours to extricate the bodies after using a crane to lift the trailer.

People never learn. From the written account, the driver of the BMW was speeding because the car engine was 'blown 50m away' from the accident site. The BMW driver was probably in a hurry, lost control and whammed into the lorry. Even if the lorry had broken down the afternoon before, why wasn't it towed away knowing that it posed a potential danger? Were there reflector triangles placed at a safe distance to warn other motorists of its presence? In his folly, the BMW driver not only lost his life but also caused those of his entire family. Most people would just dismiss this loss as 'fate' (takdir). I see it as an avoidable fatality. With the coming Chinese New Year holidays and traffic exodus, people are encouraged to drive after midnight for the discounts given. Now, this accident happened after midnight. Many serious accidents happened after midnight. Possibly the drivers were tired and dopey at the wheel. Are we then 'looking forward' to more 'fated' accidents this CNY hols? Do the highway concessionaires really care?

This is a normal thing. I've seen cars park as how the owner wish it should be parked. I've seen cars park at the road side that is meant for 2 lanes but transformed into just 1 lane. I've seen so many things in Malaysian road. I think this is great. when it involve a huge accident, authorities say, we'll study it, we'll come out with greater fines and all. After this Chinese new year, all will be quiet, back to normal :) this is why I LOVE MALAYSIA!!!!!!!!!

In 2007 after a series of fatal accidents involving smaller vehicles ramming high clearance vehicles, the then PM Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi announced that the government will enforce regulations for trucks to have underrun bars installed based on his personal observation of truck safety features in Japan.

In 2008 MIROS' head was reported to be in the midst of studying of the design of trucks and lorries with overhangs to ensure no more lives are lost after 45-year-old Jamaliah Jawan was killed after colliding into a lorry's overhang near the Tapah rest area on the North-South Expressway. Sadly, after years of soul searching, and even after the deaths of a very senior civil officer, and a prominent entreprenuer along with his wife and his 4 young kids, we have failed to acknowledge that our real failure is in lacking the political will to change things, even in matters of life and death.

This happened in a BMW 5 Seriex - even a luxury car won't help save your life. Drive slow. My condolences to the family.

you dont need much speed to have a fatal accident if a car hits a trailer parked by the side of the highway. most of these accidents occur because the driver fell asleep, especially since its 1.30am. speed itself isn't always the cause of fatal accidents. to focus on speed alone to reduce accidents is the wrong way to go about it.
