Sugar distribution system restructured by March
SIPITANG (Sabah): The restructuring of the sugar distribution system is expected to be completed next month, said Domestic Trade, Cooperative and Consumerism Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.
He said the process would entail reviewing the licences of problematic and unsuitable wholesalers.
Among factors considered include ensuring the smooth supply of sugar to consumers by wholesalers, he told reporters after the launch of a campaign to reduce sugar intake here today.
He said the ministry was also considering a proposal that only one wholesaler would be appointed for each district.
Earlier in his speech, he said according the Consumer Association of Penang, Malaysia was ranked eight in the world for sugar intake with each person consuming 25 spoonful of sugar daily, three times more than the World Health Organisation's recommendation.
He said the Malaysian Diabetic Association expected that diabetic patients in the country would surpass 2.5 million by 2030 as projected by the WHO from the present 1.2 million.
Ismail Sabri said Sabah recorded the lowest diabetes' percentage in the country at 4.9 per cent compared to the national average of 14.9 per cent.
"Maybe the people of Sabah are practising a healthy food intake and lifestyle, which could be emulated by others," he added.
He said the nearly RM1 billion sugar subsidy would not be abolished as it would affect the prices of other goods.
