Wheelchair-bound SPM achiever aspires to be an accountant
PUTRAJAYA: Despite not being able to talk nor write, teenage Tan Bing-Xuan obtained spectacular results in the SPM examination.
Wheelchair-bound Tan, 18, obtained 6A+ 2As making her one of four top SPM scorers for special students.
Her mother Lee Wai Leng, who is the only one who could understand Tan's slurred speech and sign language, hoped her daughter's result would enable her to enter University Malaya.
"We hope she will be able to obtain a scholarship to enter UM," said the housewife.
According to Lee, Tan, who aspires to be an accountant, chose UM as she has many friends studying there. As the family is from Ipoh, it will be much easier for them to take care of Tan while pursuing her tertiary studies.
Tan had been wheel-chair bound since Std Four after coming down with a fever. She was later diagnosed as suffering from Generalised Dystonia.
Although Tan can read and memorise things she almost has no control of her other limbs. Lee said her daughter spent a year to relearn how to hold things although she was still unable to write for long.
Tan did her SPM on a computer. Tan also scored top marks in her UPSR and PMR examinations.
Tan and other top SPM scorers were honoured with certificate of achievement from Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin at the Education Ministry this morning
Another special student, declared a top scorer, Ahmad Rahimi Sudin studied for the examination by mentoring his classmates.
The 18-year-old from Kuala Terengganu, who was born with a deformed left leg, obtained 7A+ and 2As in the examination.
Ahmad Rahimi said he tutored his classmates in Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Additional Mathematics and Islamic studies.
He said by mentoring his classmates he ended up doing better in his studies.
