Obama to appear on 'The View'

LOS ANGELES: President Barack Obama will appear on female chat show The View on Thursday, the first appearance by a sitting US president on a daytime TV talk show.

Obama's July 29 appearance will be taped tomorrow.

He will be asked about jobs, the economy, the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico and family life inside the White House, ABC network said in a statement.

Veteran journalist and The View co-host Barbara Walters will also return to the studio for Obama's appearance for the first time since she underwent open heart surgery in May.

Obama appeared on The View in March 2008 when he was campaigning for the US presidency and his wife Michelle was a featured co-host in June of that year.

"We are so pleased and honoured that President Obama will be a guest on 'The View.'...This shows that both the president and first lady feel that our show is an influential and important source of information and news," Walters, 80, said in a statement.

In March last year, Obama became the first sitting president to appear on a US late-night talk show, when he was a guest on NBC's The Tonight Show, hosted by Jay Leno.

Whoopie, I have always been a fan of yours. Congratulations on your coup in having the President of the United States on your show (The View). My hope is that you will ask him the right questions as you have the chance. Please ask him how it is that he has found his way to mortgage the future of our grandchildren's grandchildren in order to advance his socialist agenda. How do we think that America has become great? I'll answer my own question; It's because our great Nation has been built upon competition and not upon the entitlement of those who prefer not to compete for their well being. Who is going to pay for all of this? I'm a disabled American who has had great strife in my life. Somehow, I've found my way to getting myself off of the public dole with nothing short of shear diligence. That was my responsibility and is something that I'm very proud of. I expect nothing less from all Americans who may be much more able than I am. Our place in society is only as prominent as our willingness to compete for it. I don't really expect a response from you in that I think that I know your politics (I could be wrong). Nonetheless, it would please me greatly to hear from you. Sincerely, Robin Smith San Diego, CA RsmithRbs@aol.com
