Songkok-making

PETALING JAYA: With Hari Raya not too far away, many traders are well into the final stages of their preparations for this festive period.

But for husband-and-wife business partners Syafri Musa, 56, and Yusmaniar Yuli (pic), 54, they have even more reasons to celebrate.

The duo started their songkok weaving business 20 years ago but never had their own shop.

This Raya will be special for them as their long-awaited dream of having a small shop has come true.

"All this while, it's been quite difficult because we had to weave all the songkok at our Taman Medan home. Our house isn't big enough to accommodate all the materials needed to produce songkok.

"Recently, a friend decided to put his shop in Taman Dato Harun up for sale and we took over without giving it a second thought. We will move in right after Hari Raya. It feels like the business is taking a new turn for the better!" said an elated Yusmaniar.

With the festive season usually the busiest period of the year, Yusmaniar said they would make the most of it by not only providing wholesale to retailers, but going to their normal morning market spots at Jalan Klang Lama.

"This is the best time to go all out for sales. Hopefully, we can attract as many people as possible with our appealing designs. Perhaps that will draw the attention of people as we also plan to promote our new shop."
