THAT is the shout-out from The Recyclists for more Malaysians to come forth and put in their pledge to help save the Earth at their site here.

All they are asking is for you to say no to one plastic bag a day. Imagine if a million folks turned their noses up to plastic bags, won't we be able to turn things around?

The Recylists was started by a group in the local performing arts scene in March 2008 via Blogspot. They have since secured a domain, http://www.projectdailymillion.com/.

Their mission message is simple - E-C-O. It is all about adopting and encouraging the 3Rs concept, namely reuse, reduce and recycle. They also believe in caring for all living beings and to further emphasise their point, The Recyclists also organise events to promote this lifestyle.

They have held a charity concert, featuring local celebrities, with proceeds going to beneficiaries such as the Malaysia Nature Society (MNS) and the Independent Pet Rescuers (IPR). There was also a road show at Sunway University College in April this year, reaching out to the younger generation to spread the word and most importantly, to get people to sign up for the pledge.

The number is growing slowly but steadily with about 700 pledges to date since their roadshow says Janet Lee, one of the volunteers on board.

You can also find them on Facebook.

Janet says they have 844 members in their Facebook group, The Recyclists, but not all have signed the pledge.

She tries to send out a message every month to welcome new members and to get them to sign up, hoping people will be inspired by her words.

"It is also hard as we don't have ongoing monthly campaigns to recruit new pledgers," says Lee.

Trying to up the figure, Lee, a singer and performer, sent out a mass email urging her friends and the public to sign up.

Lee says in her email: "I have chosen a lifestyle of having my own drinking bottle/bag around because I want to reduce my personal consumption of plastic products (bottled mineral water for a start).

"I also always carry in my various huge handbags a set of reusable utensils so I don't need to use another plastic spoon or fork at food courts of takeout counters. In my handbag on most days, I have with me a foldable shopping bag so I don't have to take a plastic bag to hold my purchases over the cashiers."

Lee wishes she has more resources and time to organise a massive green movement but at the moment, she is playing her "little part through my everyday routine - things everybody can do with just a little bit of effort - you know we cannot pretend that going green is ever easy but doing a small bit isn't hard."

So if you believe in the cause, check out http://www.projectdailymillion.com/ for all you need to know be a recyclist and live life right. It is also easy to put your name down. Just fill in the form.

For a good cause

The Recyclists are not the only ones turning to the Net to reach out to people. Even WWF Malaysia has started a site, http://www.saveturtles.my/, in a bid to save our turtles.

The campaign "Egg=Life" started on Earth Day, April 22 this year and will go on until September.

The target is 40,000 pledges from the public and when you pledge, what you are doing is supporting laws that will ban the sale and consumption of turtle eggs throughout Malaysia.

The pledge also calls for comprehensive and holistic Federal legislation to conserve marine turtles and for you to never consume turtle eggs or trade in turtles or their parts.

So far, there are 3073 pledges as stated on the site and I'm proud to say I'm one to those who have signed up for the pledge.

By Google-ing my way online, I found many more causes and fights, especially those that call out to conserve our natural heritage.

At Care2 Petitionsite, I found a petiton for Malaysians and even people around the world to help save endangered species in our country from unnecessary logging.

Go here for the letter addressed to our Prime Minister.

Their target is 35,000 and they have 31,920 signatures in hand.

Don't you think it's about time to lend your name to a just fight?

Bring back David Archuleta

David Archuleta

DEAR DAVID: Come back to Malaysia! Love, your Archangels

On a more light-hearted note, this one is for fans of David Archuleta.

These fans have been struck with Overdose of David Disorder (ODD) and they just can’t get enough of him.

Thus, their ”acute disorder” has pushed Malaysia’s very own Archangels from Archuleta Avenue Malaysia (AAM) to start a petition online to bring the Idol star back to Malaysia for a fullblown concert.

A showcase at Sunway Lagoon Theme Park Amphitheatre in April this year saw more than 5,000 frenzied fans screaming their lungs out for the down-to-earth singer. There were even five-year-olds who made it there with their mummies.

Obviously Archangels here just want more, more and more of Archuleta.

According to John, one of the five behind AAM, to date, the petition has managed to chalk up almost 500 names. They need 5,000!

Read John’s entry here as to how and why the petition came about and most importantly, put your name down at the petition here.

Every name makes a difference and the difference could be an Archuleta concert!
