Why baby delivery bill is higher
ONG is shocked at the bill for the delivery of his third child recently.
He says that his wife delivered their third child at Sunway Medical Centre and was discharged on June 22.
During the discharge, he was shocked when shown the bill that came up to RM6,300.
"Both my two older children were also born at this hospital," says Ong. "The total delivery charges for both was not as high."
As his wife was discharged at about 7pm, the cashier at the hospital told him that any request for a discount
could not be entertained then as it would need to be checked against senior staff during office hours.
As such, the cashier advised Ong to pay the full amount and write in an appeal to the hospital for a discount.
Ong says he wrote the appeal letter the next day, but has not got any response so far.
He also said he made several calls to the hospital to check on his appeal but the person in charge always
seemed to be "out".
Ong wonders just how long it will take for a response to his appeal.
● A SPOKESMAN for Sunway Medical Centre acknowledges receiving the "complaint letter" from Ong on June 30."He made a comparison to the deliveries of his first two children also in our hospital in 2003 and 2006."
The spokesman explained: "Firstly, we would like to put on record that the cost of medical care has risen over the years and we cannot compare the cost of a delivery from 2006 to 2009.
"We have carried out thorough investigations into this matter and we would like to clarify that the earlier two deliveries were normal deliveries without any complications.
"However, with the recent delivery, his wife complained of chest pain and she was referred by her consultant gynaecologist to see a consultant chest physician.
"The chest physician subsequently referred the patient for a chest x-ray and an ultrasound of the pelvic area and also administered an injection to reduce blood clots (anticoagulant).
"The chest physician also saw the patient in the ward four times and she was charged the usual consultation fees."
As such, the spokesman said: "We would like to clarify that we had to carry out additional investigations to address the patient's medical complaints which incurred additional costs."
