The first thing that would hit you with Edge of Darkness (EOD) would be how old Mel Gibson looks.

THE announcement by Information, Communication and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim on 'wajib siar' or compulsory airing of new local releases appears to have gotten favourable response from the entertainment fraternity.

Beneath the early celebrations, however, reigns much confusion and concern over just how much effect will the ruling have when it is implemented on March 1.

Some people might remember the 1995 Rugby World Cup. This writer, for example, was at a boarding school in Seremban, watching it on TV whenever he could sneak into a place with television.

The whole school was into rugby, and the buzzword for the whole World Cup was Jonah Lomu who was a New Zealand All-Blacks player.

Rebellion is a true fountain of youth. Over a simple lunch of nasi campur with Shahili Abdan (Nam Ron), one could see that he has recovered a bit of his vigour and enthusiasm in the arts.

One thing's for sure, you can always depend on Yuen Woo Ping to dish out a traditional kung fu movie like True Legend.

Yuen was behind such classics like Drunken Master, Snake in the Eagle's Shadow, Tai Chi Master, Iron Monkey and Wing Chun — all of which are timeless, traditional kung fu movies.

Last Friday, Dogen had the honour of being the first new band to play at the National Press Club's (NPC) clubhouse at Jalan Tangsi, as part of a new initiative.

The first thing this band tells you is that if you add an 'O' at the end of their name, Dogen, it becomes Dogeno. Which, in reverse can be read as One God. What?

The trailer and the poster made this movie look as if it will feature billions of angels, armed to the teeth with 21st Century weapons, fighting each other.

Unfortunately, SPOILER ALERT! — only two are featured. So, even though the title is
Legion, don't expect legions of angels rendered in expensive special effects.

With the tagline "Part spy. Part babysitter. All hero" and "spying is easy, babysitting is hard", you can't really expect anything new from Jackie Chan's latest offering — The Spy Next Door.

Even the title is reminiscent of Codename: Kids Next Door and Spy Kids — two popular kids' shows.

DON'T believe the hype. Merantau Warrior is much more than another martial arts movie or an Ong Bak wannabe.

At one point, it seemed like one famous person died every week.

Well, the premise was good.

Rather, the project sounded fantastic — one of the best directors in the world today, Guy Ritchie, and Robert Downey Jr, one of the best actors in the world — were making a movie about the greatest detective ever in literary history.

Maybe it's a case of having too many good things at once, but the movie was almost a yawn.

With Astro's unveiling of the HD-enabling B.yond services this morning, a lot of Malaysians might be jumping for joy at the thought of watching Didier Drogba or Jessica Alba in full High Definition (HD). Imagine that — the FIFA World Cup 2010 or Into the Blue in HD! However, though is the catchphrase of the moment, and a major thrust in Astro's latest offering, it is not the full story.

There is an online forum called Twilight Sucks which catalogues all supposed physical and verbal attacks by rabid Twilight fans – called Twihards – on non-Twilight fans (some Twilight haters are called Anti).

The attacks range from verbal insults to alleged broken ankles. Oh well. The Antis shouldn't be provoking the Twihards that much, knowing how fanatic they can be.

JIT Murad is still performing 1 Load of BullJit at PJ Live Arts Centre, if  anyone is interested.

Opening night featured a packed  house with the chairs arranged noticeably close. Which was okay, as the air-conditioning was blasting away in full force.

Bring a jacket or pashmina. Or just let Jit's jokes tickle you pink. Pretty soon, you'll forget about the cold.

Adam Lambert should have won American Idol. That was what a lot of people were probably thinking during the show’s eighth season finale. However, a lot more felt that Kris Allen deserved the title as well as a career in the music industry, and spoke with their votes.

It’s all academic now, as both stars are on the right track. Lambert is finally releasing his debut effort this week.

SUSAN Boyle opened her mouth, Jan 21 of this year, and the world just flipped. Her self-admittedly plain looks and powerful voice was both inspiring and in essence, rebellious.

In a world where singers are manufactured by recording labels and while most are as plastic as the CD covers they sell, or the surgeries they undergo, here was an all-natural, ‘organic’ singer with a wonderful voice.

Imagine this. You work till 10pm everyday, so usually you miss the 8 o’clock news. You go home, tuck your kids in, turn on the TV, and watch the 8 o’clock news at 11pm.

Then you check the personal online page of the hottie in your office, through the TV, and you find her recommending True Blood, season two, episode 12.

RAGING Phoenix would have been the best martial arts movie made in the past five years, if you had a remote in the cinema that could forward the movie when it went through its emo stages.

This Thai movie had it all. Amazing fight scenes, with most of the cast using a martial art called Meyraiyuth

While being comedic geniuses does help, Comedy Court’s Indi Nadarajah and Allan Perera’s real strength, when it comes down to it, is their humility and empathy. In the middle of an exclusive interview with Malay Mail,
the two started plugging another show happening at the same time.

It’s no real surprise, but there is a satay museum in Kajang. Called Galeri Sate, it documents and preserves the history of the skewered meat dish as well as how it came to Malaysia. Indonesia’s Bendera guys rest easy.

It is recognised publicly that satay does indeed hail from some parts of Indonesia.

A Western dude trained in the ways of the ninja has to protect an ancient wooden box from a rogue techno ninja who killed their sensei (master). What do we call this film? Ninja, of course.

Could have called it The Last Ninja. Tom Cruise wouldn’t mind.

If the title didn’t give away how straightforward this movie is, the first monologue — two minutes into it — gave away all the plot.
