myWHERE HE FELL? Police and forensics studying the 14th floor window where it is believed Teoh could have fallen from

WE always take the simplest things for granted, don't we?

It may be a moot point in the case of Teoh Beng Hock, but by now, many must surely be wishing that somebody had installed a CCTV system at the Selangor MACC building in Shah Alam.

A few thousand ringgit would have saved us this circus that has heightened suspicions among some of us.

Spices are being arbitrarily thrown into the already boiling-hot pot to only make the dish hotter than necessary.

There is this worry that dish may not even taste good; in fact, bitter may just be the only taste that we, Malaysians, would end up with.

Theories are aplenty on what could have transpired, but as civil Malaysians that we strive to be, why are we jumping to conclusions when no one has been able to produce a shred of evidence to back up these claims?

At the end of the day, what we need first is nothing more, or nothing short, of the truth.

If indeed there were criminal elements, or negligence, then let the law take its course after that.

There should be no favours done, and those guilty of any form of misdemeanour should be severely dealt with. Teoh's death should not be in vain.

In the meantime, we should be able to calm ourselves down and not be blinded by the fact that pertinent to all our reactions should be to first let the cops do their work in peace.

Already, we have theories of suicide, accidental fall, and even underworld links. That, and the hurling of unsavoury accusations that degrade us as Malaysians.

Have we become such wretched creatures now in the eyes of each other that we cannot sit, eat, work and do almost anything together?

No, we need to be sensible.

Let the cops do their work, and hurry they must. The sooner the better, with impartiality, so that we know the truth.

While they do their work, we should reject calls for the MACC to stop investigating the very complaint that led to Teoh being at Plaza Masalam in the first place.

Is his death a reason for complaints of abuse of public funds to stop being looked into? Wasn't graft combating one of the salient promises given to us by almost every other YB-wannabe pre-March 2008?

Those who argue that investigations should cover everybody, never mind your political affiliation, are the sensible ones, really. No one should be spared, the authorities should take no prisoners in this matter.

Misusing your powers and what doesn't belong to you is wrong, no matter if it's the dacing, bulan or roket you prefer.

Comments

CCTV is only effective if it is functioning, provides clear picture and is monitored. In the absence of any of these aspects the CCTV serves as an ornament and the funds expended a waste. Examples of such CCTVs can be seen at most traffic junctions where traffic rules are percieved to be continuously broken but it cannot be ascertained if the culprits are penalized. Our Authorities should learn from Singapore Police whose presence is not visible but they are effective through their CCTVs which satisfy all the above aspects and penalties are swift and heavy. As an example just stand at a pedestrian crossing without lights and see the vehicles stop instantly which situation I see near the Tg Pagar Railway Station in Singapore whenever I need to visit the Republic.
