On a positive note

The Anugerah Industri Muzik (AIM) is coming up and since last year's AIM - there were only a few new talents that emerged.

No big celebration there for the music industry but still, hope is kept alive with the presence of these newcomers.

For this year's AIM, many hope to see something good for the local industry when governmental representatives, industry heads, media as well as artistes and their management entities are seated together in a forum to thrash out certain issues.

It is time to rejoice, for there is a glimmer of hope that our music industry will now enjoy a rejuvenation after a depressing diet of the tired, the manufactured and the formulaic.

The two names dishing it out are both aged 24 and they go by their first names. They are not only great singers, but they can work musical instruments just as well!

There are several things to deal with before we move on to some news and gossips that made headlines over the past week.

Firstly, our condolences to the family of the late Mohd Shukor Tahir. Fondly known as Koi in local entertainment circles, he was attached to 8TV, under 8 Unit and a familiar face who accompanied several known artistes including Faizal Tahir.

More recently, he was with the Persatuan Akademi Industri Muzik Malaysia (PAIMM).

It may not have been an all-out rock extravaganza, and yet only those who mistakenly imagined so would have been disappointed - and mildly at that.

Who can complain, when the young, raw and edgy sounds of commercial rock of Aizat and Faizal Tahir collided with the sultry pop vocals of Datuk Siti Nurhaliza to create a musical soundscape that defies current local pop trends and the direction of its future.

THE announcement by Information, Communication and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim on 'wajib siar' or compulsory airing of new local releases appears to have gotten favourable response from the entertainment fraternity.

Beneath the early celebrations, however, reigns much confusion and concern over just how much effect will the ruling have when it is implemented on March 1.

Artistes, celebrities or popular personalities should never be role models.

While this is true anywhere, it is especially so in Malaysia, with the endless number of names who get caught for various shenanigans.

Take actress Zarina An-Julie for example.

The 24-year-old has had more than her fair share of controversies, but testing positive for drugs over a week ago?

Eight is a very lucky number for many. The Chinese especially love it as the pronunciation of the word sounds similar to 'prosperity'.

We begin the year of the Tiger with a roar. The mood is celebratory and what better way than to top it off with a round of gossip to lighten up your day.

Before we move on to another round of bits, let's first congratulate Siti Nurhaliza Productions (SNP) for their brave venture, Konsert Satu Suara at the Istana Budaya.

Indeed, the young 'uns in Aizat and Faizal Tahir did well, as did Siti, in the two-hour concert.

What does it take to be an Idol? If reigning American Idol Kris Allen's advice is anything to go by, the secret is pretty simple. "I think playing an instrument helps."

Sound advice as he handled quite a few instruments during his performances on the show including the acoustic and electric guitar, keyboard and the piano.

KUALA LUMPUR: It’s a case of something old, something new, something borrowed and something due for  season eight of popular reality TV show, Akademi Fantasia (AF8).

An eerie sense of déjà vu shrouded the cheque presentation and briefing for artistes and musicians at the Putra World Trade Centre last week.

Alert the newbies

What happens when the illequipped are thrown into the limelight?

Well, they make fools of themselves when they rant on endlessly about how things don't live up to their expectations.

In the case of most shell-shocked newbies, when they enter the entertainment business, usually it's the basking in the limelight which they enjoy.

HER name has been mentioned for all the wrong reasons over the past year, and Daphne Eleanor Iking is not up for another round of embarrassment.

The actress and TV personality is now putting her foot down — arming herself with legal ammo and ready to hit back.

They enjoy the simple pleasures in life and believe in sharing those little moments of joy in their music.

Who would have thought that a little episode like stealing time from their performing schedule to eat Hainanese chicken rice in Bukit Bintang could fuel Nidji to continue to rock and electrify their legion of fans.

The warning has come out too many times.

And still, our artistes continue to parade their private lives for the world to see.

In a judgmental society that somehow expects the highest standards of moral conduct from our celebrities — you’d think it was time our entertainment industry practitioners realise that they are open targets, 24-7.

Despite that, they keep making the mistake of always revealing too much in their own blogs, social networking accounts and such, or allow their friends and acquaintances to upload images or text to compromise their position.

The talents from reality TV talent search programmes have gotten a bad rep in recent years.

Dozens, if not hundreds from a variety of shows have come and gone after their five minutes of fame and few have managed to elevate themselves from the status of D-list 'celebrities'.

Dayang gives her all to produce a mini

The world goes through cycles and the tables have turned.

Yes, the day has arrived where acts dubbed 'indie' for having a track or two of jangly guitars in the mix, have been given priority access and pop divas who are not Datuk Siti Nurhaliza have to work harder to be heard.

Solve it amicably

LAST week, actor Fahrin Ahmad and former flame, radio personality Linda Onn (right) hit the headlines when the former declared he would initiate legal action against her.

Accusing her of smearing his name by implying he got physical with her, Fahrin's action may be justified, but it definitely does not make the situation any better.

Paranormal activity?

OVER the past week or so, after the 24th Anugerah Juara Lagu (AJL24) ended, one story emerged from the event that blazed the web. In the blog of yours truly, photos were posted, then picked up by forums, websites, blogs and much more, apart from being distributed via email.

The photos depict a figure or an 'entity' perched precariously atop the rafters of the stadium.

DATUK Siti Nurhaliza’s birthday wish is simple. She wants a child soon with her husband Datuk Seri Khalid Jiwa.

Ironically, while the first single released from her collaborative effort with Indonesian pop queen Krisdayanti is titled Amarah (anger) — it stands for something else that even Siti might not be aware of.

Thursday, January 14th, 2010 14:23:00

WEDDING bells are indeed going to ring for Indonesian pop diva Krisdayanti in 2010. She was spotted recently at the reigning Malay pop queen Datuk Siti Nurhaliza's birthday bash, as well as the launch of their collaboration album CTKD.

While she was reluctant to reveal full details, KD — as she is more affectionately known, said plans were indeed under way.

AJL 24 — a job well done!

WERE you pleased with the 24th Anugerah Juara Lagu (AJL24)? Is the show worth the RM2 million price tag it was said to have cost?

It did look impressive, but there will always be detractors who would snort otherwise. Whatever it is, kudos to TV3 for a job well done on the production side of things, despite some minor technical glitches. Still, there were the usual incidents that almost marred the event.

The stage was set and the audience roared for a celebration of the year’s best music at the 24th Anugerah Juara Lagu (AJL24).

TV3’s production crew, headed by executive producer Ahmad Shaifullizam or Gbam, set up the most expensive production in the history of AJL with a production cost of RM2 million.

PETALING JAYA: It was a simple ceremony for the couple who believe they have found true love.

Three years after the end of her first marriage, actress and producer Nor Aliah Lee Abdullah, 38, tied the knot with businessman and polo player Mohammad Zekri Ibrahim, 41, today.

Nor Aliah was glowing, and the picture of a happy bride.

“Zekri is a good man, and he is a good father and even my kids love him.

IF the low budget horror movie Paranormal Activity could be summed up in one word, that word would be 'Madonna'.

While some fans of the Queen of Perve may go into seizures over the comparison, the truth is,
Paranormal Activity has taken a page out of Madge’s book of survival.

IT'S 2010, and perhaps it's not too late to wish everyone a great year ahead. There is much to hope for in the world of local entertainment, and most would involve a better scenario for all disciplines of local movies, TV and music.

There are signs that our homegrown scene is forging ahead, but in most cases, it's limited by nostalgic sentiments of achievements of yesteryear.

Whether it be the old names who dominate associations, or the same characters who have a grip on a certain industry — everyone has to realise that it's all about relevance.

THE stakes are higher than they have ever been, with bigger cash prizes up for grabs. However, that's only true for the top three songs in the 24th Anugerah Juara Lagu (AJL24).

FORMED in 1996, and rolling out its first movie in 2001, Tayangan Unggul Sdn Bhd (TU) has established itself as one of the major players in the Malaysian movie-making industry.

After more than two dozen releases, there have been hits and misses along the way. One thing for sure however, is that they never play it safe. Name the genre. Be it romance, horror comedies, drama, musicals, suspense thrillers or a mash-up of two or more of these elements, TU has done it.

IT was a landslide victory, and yet the reaction was mixed towards the win of Sein and Nana as the champions of the third season of Sehati Berdansa.

Having captured 84 per cent of the total SMS votes received, beating Sazzy and Naz's paltry 16 per cent, Sein shrugged off any question of their win.

IT’S definitely not too late to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and happy holidays. With just a few days left to the new year, comes new hope for the local entertainment industry.

Perhaps our local celebrities and personalities of music and the big and small screens, will learn to be more watchful... or at least not get caught lying. Well, actually scratch that. If that happens, which it never will, gossip columns wouldn't exist.

KUALA LUMPUR: The hot seat as the principal of Malaysia's top reality show, Akademi Fantasia may get its youngest ever candidate.

According to sources, KRU Studios president and chief executive officer Norman Abdul Halim, 37, has been tipped as the favourite for the post. Despite not having signed on the dotted line, it is rumoured that he is a shoo-in for the job.

KUALA LUMPUR: The hosts for popular dance reality program Sehati Berdansa, actor and actress Awal Ashaari and Scha Alyahya, came clean tonight in a tell-all that was aimed at clearing the air.

FROM hosting reality TV to actually being a contestant of one — it is a bittersweet moment for Sazzy Falak as  Sehati Berdansa draws to a close this Saturday night with its grand finale.

THE stage may laughably be the most direct interpretation of a theme.

FOR the last time, perhaps our music industry people should learn that the term 'indie' doesn't reflect a genre.

The term, which refers to independent  production and distribution  an artistic body of work, can reflect the style of work, though this is generally used loosely on such products which are generally of indie rock origin.

WE’VE had so many negative stories about the local music industry, so finally here's the chance to highlight  something that will definitely bring a smile and some hope to all of us.

MAKE-UP artists are often regarded here as merely those dabbling with cosmetics to make someone look pretty.

How about going through the same rigorous process — only this time, it's to make someone look hideous?

While Malaysia has witnessed an explosion of sorts in the horror movie genre, all too often, cheap effects spoil it for a production.
