Sharp Spurs
TOTTENHAM have been prolific scorers in pre-season so far and manager Harry Redknapp is pleased with the way that Jermain Defoe, Darren Bent and Roman Pavlyuchenko have been scoring.
A good examp l e was when they beat Championship club Peterborough 4-0 on Tuesday with Bent opening the scoring and strikes from Defoe and Pavlyuchenko sandwiching an effort from midfielder Luka Modric. And Redknapp is very satisfied with the sharpness that his strikers have shown in pre-season so far.
“They’ve all been scoring and they look sharp. Darren took his goal well, Roman’s goal was a great finish and Jermain scored, as usual,” Redknapp told the club’s website.
“Robbie Keane missed the match with a slight groin problem but we’re doing okay. It was a good game for us but preseason is all about getting fit, that’s the key thing.”
Now Spurs can look forward to this weekend’s Wembley Cup, with eagerly anticipated games against Spanish and European champions Barcelona and Scottish giants Celtic on the immediate horizon.
Spurs play Barca on Saturday (3am) while Celtic are Sunday’s opponents. And Redknapp is excited about facing such illustrious opponents.
“It will be an interesting game for us. I’m sure it will be a terrific atmosphere at Wembley against a fantastic team, the European champions and we’re all looking forward to it,” he said.
“We’ve two great games at Wembley with Celtic as well on the Sunday. It will be good for us.”
Barca arrived in London on Tuesday with 11 B team players all hoping to impress in the tournament as the team kick off their pre-season against Spurs.
In the absence of Carles Puyol, Xavi, Andres Iniesta, Gerard Pique, Sergio Busquets, Dani Alves, Samuel Eto’o and Gabi Milito, manager Josep Pep Guardiola will give the young hopefuls a chance.
In the opening game of the minitournament, Barca take on Spurs in what will be both clubs’ first game at the rebuilt English national stadium, in an event that also sees Al-Ahly of Egypt competing.
Along with first team regulars Victor Valdes, Jose Manuel Pinto, Albert Jorquera, Martin Caceres, Víctor Sanchez, Henrique, Maxwell, Rafa Marquez, Eric Abidal, Seydou Keita, Yaya Toure, Eidur Gudjohnsen, Aliaksandr Hleb, Bojan Krkic, Thierry Henry, Lionel Messi and Pedro — 11 youth team starlets will appear.
