IT'S been a long time since Abu Dhabi last year and it seems like ages since we saw a F1 car on the track. But the teams have not been sitting idle. In fact, last month saw them doing plenty of pre-season testing as they get ready for the new season.

The times have been very close with no one having a clear advantage, unlike last year where Brawn GP dominated testing.

WHAT a season we have had this year! The new regulations introduced in 2009 were the biggest that F1 has had in about 10 years and it shook up the establishment.

Ferrari and McLaren were nowhere at the beginning of the season and this allowed some of the mid-fi eld runners to stake a claim. Red Bull, Toyota and Williams were very quick at the beginning of the year, but they were no where as good as the new Brawn GP, who arose from the ashes of Honda.

INTERLAGOS, Sao Paulo hosts the penultimate round of the 2009 Formula 1 World Championship. It has been the scene for memorable title deciders in the last two years, with Kimi Raikkonen snatching the title from the McLaren duo (Lewis Hamilton & Fernando Alonso) in 2007 and Hamilton winning the 2008 title on the very last corner.

I LOVE Suzuka. When you arrive there, it's the same feeling as when you arrive at Monza or Spa. Okay, Suzuka may not have been around as long, but we have seen so many great duels there. Alain Prost up against Senna in 1989 and 1990, Michael Shumacher and Mika Hakkinen.

THE Italian Grand Prix is another classic round on the Formula 1 calendar. It’s the fastest track on the calendar where cars go over 330 km/h four times a lap, which also makes it pretty dangerous. Drivers treat this track with a lot of respect, although it is not as physically challenging as places such as Monaco or Spa.

DESPITE there being a long break since Hungary, there has been plenty of Formula 1 news to keep us all happy. First of all, we almost had Michael Schumacher back racing in an F1 car.

While Felipe Massa was out with an injury, Schumacher had announced he would be happy to replace the Brazilian which sent shock waves around the international motorsport community.

NUERBURGRING, Germany marks the half way point of this year’s Formula 1 World Championship. And while the headlines during the three-week season break have mostly been about the controversy with Max Mosley and Bernie Ecclestone saying some rather strange stuff, let’s try and concentrate about the racing for now.

It will be fascinating to see whether Red Bull can continue their upswing in form against the Brawns of Jenson Button and Ruben Barrichello. The British GP and the cold conditions at the last race did favour Red Bull.

JENSON BUTTON is on a serious high. It’s not just that he has the best car — he is genuinely driving better than anyone in the F1 field. Ever since he won in Australia, each race has seen stronger performances by him. His last victory in Turkey was truly a master-class performance.

The British Grand Prix this weekend at Silverstone, should suit the Red Bulls a bit better, and hopefully they will give the Brawns a serious fight. But either Webber or Vettel will need to raise their game if they are going to stop the Jenson steam roller.

TURKEY is a complete contrast to Monaco. While Monaco is slow, twisty and all about downforce, the Istanbul circuit is fast with wide open corners where aerodynamic efficiency is probably more important, as even when the car produces the downforce needed, it will still be slowed down due to drag.

The Brawns and Red Bulls should lend themselves well to these conditions as they seem to be very efficient this season. Ferrari will also be up there after showing some very good developments over the last couple of races.

AT LONG last, the F1 race returns to Monaco. Monaco may be the most glamorous round of the Formula 1 World Championship, but it’s also the most challenging track for the drivers.

The slippery, bumpy tarmac with numerous camber changes are a nightmare to navigate, and drivers will struggle to keep the car on track. Even the slightest mistake can send the cars into contact with the unforgiving barriers that surround the entire circuit.

IT'S been a year of upsets so far with the form book turned upside down. This weekend marks the end of the flyaway races, at least for now, and signals the start of the European races — normally a time when the field settles down and you see the ‘real’ championship contenders step up their game. The question is, will new boys Brawn and Red Bull be able to do what Ferrari and McLaren have done in the past?

IT’S been a really exciting start to a season that seems to have heralded a new order.

Brawn GP and Red Bull Racing have been dominant thus far, and it’s refreshing to see new faces on the podium.

WITH the double-decker diffusers declared legal by the FIA international Court of Appeal this week, Brawn GP drivers Jenson Button and Rubens Barichello are in a very good position to push for the Shanghai title this weekend.

It will take the other teams at least two or three races to get their new diffusers up and running and while copying the Br
