KUALA LUMPUR: Touch 'n Go reload lanes will be closed on Feb 12, 13, 16, 20 and 21 to facilitate toll plaza operations in conjunction with the Chinese New Year holidays.

PLUS Expressways Berhad chief operating officer Nik Airina Nik Jaffar said the closure would not involve the Tanjung Kupang, Bangunan Sultan Iskandar and Bukit Kayu Hitam toll plazas.

This festive season, PLUS and Touch 'n Go Sdn Bhd will provide reload facilities at several main rest and service (R&R) areas along the North-South Expressway during the aforementioned dates.

PUTRAJAYA: Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin who failed in his bid to get the Federal Court to declare him as the rightful Perak menteri besar, is urging Pakatan Rakyat supporters to be calm.

Perak Pakatan Rakyat leaders would meet to discuss the next course of action, he told reporters after the court's decision at the Palace of Justice, here, today.

A five-man bench today unanimously declared the appointment of Datuk Seri Zambry Abdul Kadir as Perak Menteri Besar by Sultan Azlan Shah as constitutional.

SIPITANG (Sabah): The restructuring of the sugar distribution system is expected to be completed next month, said Domestic Trade, Cooperative and Consumerism Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

He said the process would entail reviewing the licences of problematic and unsuitable wholesalers.

Among factors considered include ensuring the smooth supply of sugar to consumers by wholesalers, he told reporters after the launch of a campaign to reduce sugar intake here today.

PUTRAJAYA: The proposed amendments to the Internal Security Act (ISA) will be tabled and debated at the coming Parliament sitting according to the Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein.

He said the draft of the amendments which involved five issues were being scrutinised by the Attorney General's Office before they were tabled to the cabinet for approval.

He said the proposed amendments on the five issues took into consideration views and feedbacks obtained by the ministry from the relevant parties.

KUALA LUMPUR: Three secondary school students were detained by the police after allegedly robbing a foreigner in Selayang yesterday.

Gombak district police chief ACP Abdul Rahim Abdullah said the victim, a 31-year-old Pakistani, was walking in the area at about 10.35am when the four boys, who were in school uniform, approached him.

The students then assaulted the foreigner and robbed him of his handphone, a photostat copy of his passport and RM130 before fleeing.

RAWANG: The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) will discuss tomorrow the rational for the purchase of 1,294 units of used buses at the price of RM93 million by the Syarikat Prasarana Negara Berhad (Prasarana) in 2003, PAC chairman Datuk Seri Azmi Khalid said.

He said the discussion was part of the committee's investigation into the company's asset management.He said the PAC would call the company to give its explanation.

KUALA LUMPUR: Besieged with problems, the opposition pact of PKR-DAP-PAS, or better known as Pakatan Rakyat, will hold a series of retreats next month to brainstorm strategies to counter "attacks" from the Barisan Nasional.

Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) vice-president Azmin Ali said the first retreat would be for the Pakatan Rakyat (PR) partners in Selangor on March 7, followed by the national-level retreat on March 10 or 16 in Penang.

ALOR SETAR: The Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) code of practice that was announced by the Commercial Vehicles Licensing Board (CVLB) last month to discipline bus operators will be enforced next month.

Board chairman, Datuk Halimah Mohamed Sadique, said the code would be enforced two weeks after all 224 bus operators were briefed and went through a two-day course in Kuala Lumpur on Feb 23.

She said the briefing and course would stress on bus operations, making records of bus travel, drivers' health and internal audit.

TAIPING: Three men pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court here today to causing mischief by fire at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Convent and the All Saints Church on Jan 10.

Andidi Rosidi, 22, Abdul Fattah Shaharuddin, 29, and Muhamad Ab. Wahab, 20, all self-employed and from Kamunting, were produced in the Magistrate's Court last Tuesday but no plea was recorded then because the Sessions Court judge was on leave and they were not represented.

SEMPORNA (Sabah): Out of the eight defence radar units designated for the east coast of Sabah, four are already operational, said Deputy Defence Minister Datuk Dr Abdul Latiff Ahmad.

He said the remaining four were expected come onstream by year end.

"The command and control centre for the radar network is also ready. As such, we have the capability to monitor and supervise security in Sabah round-the-clock," he told reporters after visiting the Sri Wangsa military camp near here today.

KOTA BAHARU: Malaysia's aim of not having to import rice by 2015 may be realised when two major rice-growing areas of the Muda Agriculture Development Authority (Mada) and Kemubu Agriculture Development Authority (Kada) can raise production by between five per cent and 10 per cent.

Agriculture and Agro-Based Industry Deputy Minister Datuk Wira Mohd Johari Baharum said currently, Malaysia was importing 30 per cent of its needs for rice or 700,000 tonnes from other countries annually.

KUALA LUMPUR:The High Court here today allowed a Belgian company, Fitraco NV, to enter the site of the 'Eye On Malaysia', a major tourist attraction in Melaka, and relocate the ferris wheel.

Judge Anantham Kasinather, who made the ruling in chambers, also ordered Fitraco to restore the grounds once the ferris wheel was dismantled.

PUTRAJAYA: The Employees Provident Fund (EPF) dividend for 2009 is expected to be higher compared to the 4.5 per cent paid out in the previous year.

EPF chairman Tan Sri Samsudin Osman said this was due to the local share market's stable position and good investment returns.

"A meeting on dividend rates will be held this month, while an announcement on it will be made in March," he told reporters, here today.

KUALA LUMPUR: Renegade MCA vice-president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai clarified today he had never said he would boycott MCA's functions but only stay away from the "individual functions" of party president Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat and deputy president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek.

KUALA LUMPUR: Police busted a carjacking syndicate and arrested two men in Serdang Raya near Seri Kembangan yesterday.

Subang Jaya police chief ACP Zainal Rashid Abu Bakar said with the arrest, police hope to solve at least 20 car jacking cases in and around the area.

Zainal Rashid said during a routine patrol at 12.30am yesterday, police chanced upon a duo who were behaving suspiciously near two cars.

PETALING JAYA: The Water and Energy Consumers Association of Malaysia (WECAM) today cautioned the people against being duped by companies selling water filters with dubious claims.

Its secretary-general S. Piarapakaran, said among the claims were improvement in the body's immune system, reduction in allergy and elimination of toxic materials from the water.

He told Bernama a recent survey by WECAM had even found a company which claimed that its filters could "break water molecules into smaller particles so that they can be easily absorbed by the body".

KUALA LUMPUR: A police sergeant was killed while manning traffic at an accident scene after he was knocked down by a car believed to be driven by a man who was under the influence of alcohol.

The freak accident happened at Jalan Chan Sow Lin early yesterday morning when the sergeant, Harjit Singh, 50, from the Cheras police headquarters, was knocked down by a Hyundai Getz car driven by a man at about 3am.

According to Kuala Lumpur Police Chief Datuk Wira Muhammad Sabtu Osman, the driver was drunk and drove recklessly, when the accident happened.

PENANG: A police report has been made against the Penang Malay Chamber of Commerce (DPMMPP) for allegedly making a false statement against the Penang state government.

Datuk Keramat state assemblyman Jagdeep Singh Deo, said DPMMPP claimed the state government had discriminated against Malay traders.

SIK: Penang Umno yesterday suggested the setting up of a commission to study the feasibility of a Penang state Pakatan Rakyat (PR) government helmed by the DAP.

PORT KLANG: The Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC) today called for action against a fertiliser company in Klang which allegedly used boric acid without proper safety precautions and sacked 11 workers who complained of the resultant ill-effects from exposure to the poison.

MTUC vice-president A. Balasubramaniam asked the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) to step in, saying workers at the company were unaware they were using boric acid because the management peeled off the labels from the containers.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Ranau District Office has not received any report of damage to lives and property following a mild earthquake 11km northeast of Ranau town early today.

District Officer Faimin Kamin said there was no damage probably because the quake was mild and it occurred some distance away from the town.

The Meteorological Department reported that a 2.6 magnitude quake occurred at 2.07am today 11km northeast of Ranau town, approximately at 6.1 degrees North and 116.8 degrees East.
