SOMETIMES, some signboards just jump out at you, grab you by your belt and won't let go.

This was what happened to me last week when I was driving somewhere around town. Bold as brass, right before my jerebu-irritated eyes, a signboard proclaimed, "Specialist in repairing all kinds of Continental and Japanese cars."

Not much further down the street was another one that declared the insurance agency was a "Specialist in all kinds of general and life insurance."

THREE YEARS ago, during a ghastly but compulsory maternity confinement, I sought solace reading anything ever written by J.R.R. Tolkien and Khaled Hosseini. Let's talk about the latter and keep the former for future discussion when time and word-limits are kinder to us.

Hosseini, through his best-selling fiction (I have my doubts for I still think the book is a semi-memoir), The Kite Runner, conjured up a moving image of life in Kabul.

SPARE me the need to travel the 246km from Kuala Lumpur to Manik Urai to appease this desire to tell you a plausible story - I was born and raised in the hilly land of Kuala Krai to know enough about Manik Urai without setting foot there.

My old friend, Muhammad Abdullah, runs a Caltex station in La'loh. I bet if I were to drive off and drop by there today, I would see him... There, at the cashier's seat, punching away on his cash till.

AFTER decades of reading everything I could lay my hands on, I still find teenage fantasy novels intriguing, if not downright fascinating. Hold on to that scornful laugh you are about to throw in my direction. Growing up, there was no J.K. Rowling in my universe to weave that perfect fabric of Harry Potter’s wizardry existence. Rowling published her first book, Philosopher’s Stone, in 1997.

DURING my student days abroad, when recklessness lorded over sound judgment, I did have one healthy penchant: hopping onto the bus and just walking along the streets of Sheffield – even when the unforgiving English wind threatened to freeze my ears off – in South Yorkshire.

THE moment I stepped into Kinokuniya, I felt my pulse inexplicably quicken. I knew this was it... again. You just know that some things in life are meant to be and absolutely right for you.

Some five years ago, I first sight eyes on Moleskine... and here again, was this same feeling when I spotted this larger than life cardboard cutout propped by the doorway at Kino.

A FEW months ago, I had a rather rude awakening on the rave-rage of Twitter - the 'SMS of the Internet' - no thanks to my 16-year-old cousin.

I was driving her to downtown KL when the sight of her fidgeting with her iPhone annoyed me immensely. What kind of parents bought that overrated gadget for a mere child, anyway?

"I'll Facebook you before I pick you up in five hours" I said in jest as I neared the entrance to the Pavilion.

I STEAL time from my family to read anything that comes between my hands. I creatively invent excuses (okay, even lie) to get out of doing household chores, giving myself time to curl up in a forgotten corner somewhere, to romance the words away. Hello, my name is Elviza and I’m a bookaholic.

On salary day, I buy books first before thinking of helping my husband pay for the home mortgage, car loan or that financial evil called the credit card.

EVERY morning - when my mood is as grey as unpolished Royal Selangor Pewter merchandise - I tune in to Lite FM during the ho-hum journey to the office to tune-out the work that awaits.

Last Thursday, as usual, the wacky duo, PK and Sara, were entertaining the listeners with an intriguing point of contention: Should you, should you not (try to, at least) change for your partner.

I HAVE on occasion been asked why I opted for law school and top of my list of favourite answers has been: "...because I couldn't - still can't - do math to save my life!"

Truth is law to me is a smorgasbord of everything - goodbad, ups-downs, innocent-innocent... It's never been lacking in excitement. Like even those years when the EGMs and AGMs of the Bar Council could hardly meet the quorum required.

DON’T know about you, but I have many unfathomable addictions in my life. One of them is the copious amounts of coffee I consume daily.

So last Friday, as I was standing in line at Starbucks in Bangsar Village I, a sweet voice in front of the cashier stopped me cold from scrolling the handheld:

“I’ll have a tall, decaf, non-fat, flat latte, please,” said the lanky, pleasant-looking woman, probably in her early 40s, placing her order in a single breath.

PAK Idrus, the ultimate apolitical blogger this side of the Cybersphere, once confided in me: “The weird thing about aging is that I found my childhood memories to be vivid in my head but I’d have no idea where I put my glasses five minutes ago.”

I know precisely what he’s talking about.

LAST Monday, I received an invitation to attend a fellow blogger’s book launch at the Putra World Trade Centre, organised by her publisher Dewan Bahasa & Pustaka (DBP).

Kanser Payudaraku by Dalilah Tamrin was launched together with 200 other titles published by DBP, a statutory body set up in 1956 to propel the use of the Malay language as a language of knowledge, intellect and unity.

WHEN J.K. Rowling conjured the existence of house-elves in her famed Harry Potter series, she planted a vicious seed of hope in my head: wouldn’t it be nice to have those invisible, little creatures scurrying around to sweep, dust, clean, cook and make the beds in my home?

Oh, don’t lie; we ‘homemakers’ secretly yearn for a do-it-all Dobby in our house, minus the scary physique.

HAVE you ever taken the LRT from Kelana Jaya to KL Sentral in the heat of a morning rush, let’s say on Thursday?

Ladies and Gentleman: Welcome to Planet Weird, where Nobody-Utters-A-Word.

A while ago, a flock of young executives boarded the train at the Taman Bahagia stop – draped in their formal shirts and leather shoes. Hands firmly gripped on the briefcases.
