BRUCE Lee signifies communism.

Or at least, that's what one trader learnt yesterday, after his T-shirt stall at Central Market was raided by a team from the Publication and Quranic Texts Control Division of the Home Ministry.

The trader, Patrick Saw, was told the ministry had taken a decision to clamp down on anything indicating the "promotion" of communism.

So, while Saw's T-shirts portray humorous parodies of current issues or play on English words, the Ministry officials still confiscated T-shirts with images of Bruce Lee depicted in four frames and Mao Zedong portrayed as "Mickey Maos".

Saw was informed of the raid by his staff about noon yesterday. He rushed there and also spoke to one of the officers over the phone.

POPULAR STALL: Customers having a laugh over Patrick Saw’s T-shirt designs at Central Market

"I asked him to wait for me before confiscating anything."

But, the officials left before Saw reached his stall, taking with them 83 T-shirts they declared were "obscene and  containing communist elements".

"My staff told me four government officers confiscated the T-shirts and prevented customers from buying them," he said.

Saw is puzzled by how the officer could decide what was obscene whenhe didn't have a proper command of the language.

"On the phone with him, I found he could not speak a word of English."

This is the third time that Saw's stall has been raided and he's quite frustrated.

"As a small businessman,I am keen to abide by the law. However, since the first raid on my stall on July 13, 2005, no guideline was given.None of the images on my designs were gazetted as inappropriate."

After the second raid on his stall on Sept 26, 2007, Saw claimed, he received a verbal apology from the department.

Since then, as similar images have been used in publications read by millions in Malaysia, Saw didn't expect this third raid.

Comments

Saw, don't be too upset; this is a very good publicity for you. I will look for you to buy some funny t-shirts when I come back to Malaysia. The foreigners might like them as well. Come on,  why like that, want to 'ta pau'?

This so called Quranic Texts Control Division should be more concerned that not just them, but even our religious people who authorise Halal Certification are NOT recognised by their peers from the country with the largest Muslim population for all of the work that they do. Apparently as far as they are concerned ours are just not qualified to do some of the work for which they have been entrusted with. So Patrick, forget about reasoning with them, take them on on the basis of their qualfication to carry out such judgements. I am certain if you went down to Jakarta you will find a lot more religiously educated Muslims who will be only too happy to "enlighten" these guys.

I have heard of some people grabbing Free Tee Shirts for themselves and there is nothing one can do apparently.  The shopkeepers call them 'licenced thugs'. What a shame! Nothing to laugh about.

If the government accuses Bruce Lee for promoting and associating with communism. Then why movies and mini serial of Bruce Lee was telecast on Malaysian television ? Why all the sudden jerk up coming from the government , is it all because of Ong Boon Hwa @ Chin Peng? Communism is no longer accepted , it is finished. Well expired . Only a few countries are struggling to keep communism alive What the authorities should be concern with are the racist groups whom are sowing hatred . Communism deserves its propaganda to be hung inside museums and as political studies. But racist groups started the May13th racial riot and they are showing their fangs again.

This is a classic case of Little Napoleons making life difficult for citizens trying to make an honest living. Little Napoleons without even a modicum of education to discern what's obscene and what isn't. And an antiquated mindset, to even think that Communism is a valid excuse of a bogeyman in this day and age. I'm quite sure there's a method to this officious stupidity. Such consistent harassment could be their way of issuing an "invitation to treat" for the stallholder to ask them how such matters can be "settled", and for these raids to go away. Mark my words. The sooner another government takes over to sweep out the Home Ministry of such rubbish officers, the better it is for the people!

i think i also want to buy the shirts. let say they arrest me for violating 'akta hasutan'. then, i'll be charged in court. then, the court dismiss the case bcoz there is no case. next, I'll sue the government for all the 'ganti rugi am, teladan, emosi, etc..' wow, another case of wasting taxpayers money...

Wow, this is news! I am a Bruce Lee fan. For the life of me, I did not know that Bruce Lee is closely associated with Communism. I hope the team from Publication and Quranic Texts Control Division of the Home Ministry will share with us their discovery. Patrick, just consider this as free advertisment. Thanks to the news report, now I know where I can get interesting Malaysian T-shirts for my overseas friends.

This tantamounts to BULLYING. A day will come when those responsible will face the effects of their actions upon themselves or their children. Their actions will be reflected back on them.
