KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian professional golfer Anis Helmy Hassan received a boost, thanks to Universal Fitness and Leisure (UFL) and The Golf Club KL City Centre (GCKLCC).

Anis received two Power Plate Machines — a technology to enhance fitness and endurance and attested by Tiger Woods, Colin Montgomery, Lee Westwood, and Darren Clarke — in order to improve his performance.

KUALA LUMPUR: Artistic gymnast Nabihah Ali wants to have another "fling" with the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, India in October.

She was in the team that competed at the 2006 Games in Melbourne. Nabihah was then 15 and finished 19th.

She is the only survivor from the  trio that included Nurul Fatiha Abdul Hamid and Tan Khai Leng who have retired.

“ The next few months will be crucial in my attempt to qualify. I still do not know the format of selection for the Commonwealth or Asian Games.

KUALA LUMPUR: Age has taken its toll. Shahrom Abdullah, who has competed in six Powerman World Duathlon series in Zolfingen, Switzerland, has decided to give it a miss this year.

He will instead focus his attention to the less gruelling but still popular World Duathlon Championship in Edinburgh, Scotland in September.

He recalled that since his involvement in walking events in 2002, Sabah AAA have not entered participants in

Currently ranked second behind Wong Mew Choo, she has promised to stay focussed and not let her emotions take control when playing in competitions. Lydia faces an uphill task in the German Open as she is down to meet the hosts country's Juliane Schenk who is the second seed.

KUALA LUMPUR: Sepaktakraw Association Malaysia (STAM) have included "tekong" Saravanan Kanesan in the 24-man national squad for the Asian Games in Guongzhou.

Saravanan, along with Azman Nasarudin, Mohd Futra Abdul Ghani and Mohd Dzulkarnain Ariff are among four "old" faces recalled after their impressive performances in the recent two-day carnival for Datuk Ahmad Ismail Trophy.

KUALA LUMPUR: Sepaktakraw Association of Malaysia's (STAM) new head coach, Iskandar Arshad, is giving emphasis on muscles and mental strength.

This was the criteria used when he shortlisted 27 players during a two-day carnival which ended in Bukit Jalil yesterday. The inaugural carnival drew 66 teams and it was a good platform for Iskandar to identify new talents and to assess the strengths of former players who want to don national colours again.

The academy, which caters for beginners and established players, will have five centres — Bukit Jalil, Jalan Duta, Bukit Bintang Boys’ School, 3K Subang Jaya and Bangsar Sports Complex. Nafzahizam, 25, said squash’s popularity is on the rise.

The academy hopes to contribute a steady supply of excellent players.

KUALA LUMPUR: National swimmer Daniel Bego is tipped to win the prestigious OCM Olympian-of-the-Year award. Daniel gave a spectacular performance in the Laos Sea Games last December by winning five gold medals.

Honorary secretary Datuk Sieh Kok Chi said Daniel's five-gold achievement in Laos that comes with a new Games and national record puts him as the clear favourite to win the 17th annual award.

“To be declared the best athlete at the Laos Sea Games is a milestone. It is really a big deal and he is only 20-years-old," said Kok Chi.

PUTRAJAYA: National coach K. Rajagobal was all smiles at the recent ceremony to reward athletes who won gold medals at the Laos Sea Games. The guest-of-honour and No 1 football fan, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, brought smiles all around when he announced that the government would be setting up a special fund for the development of football with an initial capital of RM10 million.

There was nostalgia when Najib gave special mention to the Laos Sea games football team. He said the last time the national team won the gold medal was at the Kuala Lumpur Sea Games in 1989.

PUTRAJAYA: The Higher Education Ministry will introduce a new national football league involving institutions of higher learning. The league is open to public universities, polytechnics, community colleges, private universities and colleges.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian 4x400metre relay team to the Laos Sea Games had been sent into "exile" in Bandar Penawar Sports School, Kota Tinggi, Johor for a week.

They were the only members of the Malaysian athletics contingent ordered to train there while the rest remained in Bukit Jalil. NATIONAL women’s tabletennis player Ng Sock Khim will sit out the Laos Sea Games because of a knee injury. She underwent an operation on Oct 27. Sock Khim, 25, who is the national champion, is bitterly disappointed.

She has featured in the past five Sea Games and was looking forward to improve on her previous best — a silver medal in the individual and bronze in the team event in Korat, Thailand.
