JOHOR BARU : Negri Sembilan’s Yan Jia Yin walked away with a double in the 100PLUS National Junior Badminton Circuit (Zone B) which ended at the Johor Badminton Hall in Larkin yesterday.

The 18-year-old student from SM Undang Rembau won the Girls’ Under-18 singles title beating Johor’s
Nurul Intan Juliza Jaafar 21-5, 14-21, 21-17.

She later teamed up with Nairul Nabilah Abdul Latif to win the Under-18 girls’ doubles title with a 21-17, 22-20 result over Nurul Intan and Tey Shi Shqi.

JOHOR BARU: Inspired by winning titles on foreign and local fronts, top shuttler Lee Chong Wei has shifted his attention and focus on winning the All-England title where he is expected to meet China's World Championship winner and Olympic gold medallist Lin Dan in the final.

Fresh from his victory in the National Grand Prix Finals, the 28-year-old Penangite, who also won the Korean and Malaysian Open last month, said it has been a fantastic start for him thus far this year.

PASIR GUDANG: Kuala Lumpur's game plan worked well as the City boys stunned Johor FC 1-0 to register their first win yesterday at the JCorp Stadium — riding on an early goal through Yong Kuong Yong.

Kuong Yong headed the ball past Johor FC goalkeeper G. Jeevanantham off a free kick taken by Azman Malik in the 18th minute which was good enough for the city lads to secure full points and move out of the relegation zone.

KL coach Razip Ismail was more than pleased as his team held out till the final whistle — a timely boost for the young KL lads who next face KL Plus.

JOHOR BARU: Johor will field a new-look team for their campaign in the Super League. The southerners were forced to come up with new faces after over half of their team who helped the State earn promotion to the Super League left to seek greener pastures elsewhere.

The team will also be operating on a shoestring budget. Johor have raised about RM1 million as of yesterday – still short of the RM3 million needed for their campaign in the M-League this year.

VIENTIANE: Mohd Zafril Zuslaini landed his first individual gold and it came in the men’s 400m — Malaysia’s first in the event since Romzi Bakar won at the Jakarta Sea Games in 1997.

Zafril, who hails from Kemaman, Terengganu immediately dedicated the gold to his late mother Zainun Abidin, who passed away due to cancer in 2007 – a month before the Korat Sea Games.

VIENTIANE: There were only four runners — including two Malaysians — in the men’s 110m hurdles but only three finished the race held in hot and humid conditions at the National Sports Complex’s Main Stadium yesterday.

At the end of the race, Malaysia could only win a silver through Mohd Robani Hassan while the other Malaysian, Muhd Faiz Mohammad, fell midway through the race.

VIENTIANE: Nancy Quillotes of the Philippines is in love and finally landed the elusive gold medal in her fourth attempt after settling for the silver in the last three editions of the Sea Games – and with sweet revenge over defending champion Wanwisa Muenjit of Thailand in the women’s 40kg–45kg category at the Chao Anouvong Gymnasium, Budo Centre.

While Nancy was jumping for joy, Wanwisa was left in tears and her coach vented his anger at the referee and had to be restrained by other Thai officials.

VIENTIANE: As a young schoolgirl, walking was never her "cup of tea" and instead Norliana Rusni used to laugh by herself at the 'cheeky' way the walkers walked when in training or in competition.

But all that changed for the SM Kebangsaan Kandis student in Bachok, Kelantan in 2002 when she was caught 'laughing' at the walkers by her sports teacher Ahair Seman. The next thing she knew was "walking the cheeky way" when Ahair got her into his walking team.

VIENTIANE: A painkiller helped Noraseela Khalid put her injury aside as she romped home to the gold medal in the women’s 400m hurdles with a time of 56.99 on the first day of the athletics competition at the Main Stadium, National Sports Complex.

“Since I took a painkiller before the run, I did not feel any pain but I am not sure what it will be tomorrow,” said Noraseela after her victory.

JFA executive Wan Nizam Wan Omar is also expected to follow suit. If that is a handful for Johor football, the players and officials have not been paid their salaries for the past two months after their main sponsor — Pasir Gudang Municipality – stopped the funds abruptly following a change in management.

MALAYSIA once again showed their supremacy in the boys’ doubles when Chooi Kah Ming-Ow Yao Han, seeded 3/4, beat Indonesians Berry Anggriawan-Muhammad Ulinnuha 19-21, 21-12, 23-21.

In a 55 minute battle at the Sultan Abdul Halim Indoor Stadium, the Malaysians once again came back from a set down to land the title in this year’s Yonex-Sunrise BWF World Junior Championships in Alor Star.

With the win, Malaysia retained their boys’ doubles title which they won in Pune, India last year through Mak Hee Chun-Teo Kok Siang. This is the fifth time Malaysia have the title.

ASIAN champions Malaysia were no match for China who were convincing in the 3-0 win in the final of the BWF World Junior Badminton mixed team event at the Sultan Abdul Halim Indoor Stadium in Alor Star last night.

Playing in their first final in the world junior championships, Malaysia had to settle for second best on a night when the Chinese showed their might to make it four out of five since the inception of the team event in 2004.

China won the team titles in 2004, 2007 and 2008 with the South Koreans inflicting the only blemish by taking the Suhandinata Cup in 2006.
