NEW YORK: Wall Street stocks posted modest gains yesterday amid cautious trading on the oneyear anniversary of the beginning of the market's rebound from its lows last year.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 11.86 points (0.11 per cent) to end at 10,564.38 after closing on a
flat note a day earlier in the absence of market-moving news.

The Nasdaq composite added 8.47 points (0.36 per cent) to 2,340.68 while the broad-market Standard & Poor's 500 index climbed 1.94 points (0.17 per cent) to 1,140.44.

CAPE TOWN: A Chinese factory has halted production of World Cup 2010 mascot toys after an investigation  into alleged sweatshop conditions, the merchandise company for world football body FIFA said yesterday.

Global Brands Group, master licensee for all FIFA World Cup 2010 merchandise, withdrew manufacturing approval after an audit of the factory showed standards had been flouted.

"The audit identified a number of non-conformances against Global Brands CSR (corporate social  responsibility) policy," the company said in a statement.

WASHINGTON: The number of millionaires in the United States jumped by 16 per cent last year after slumping by 27 per cent in 2008, a report released yesterday shows.

Last year, some 7.8 million US households had US$1 million or more in investable assets — not counting capital invested in their primary residence, the report by the Spectrem Group shows.

That was up by 1.1 million from the year before, when the number of US millionaires fell to its lowest point since 2003, hitting 6.7 million as the US economy stumbled.

SANTIAGO: Chile was shaken yesterday by a strong 6.3 earthquake that officials said was not an aftershock from the massive quake that killed more than 800 people last weekend.

Carmen Fernandez, head of the Office of National Emergency (ONEMI), said no damage had been reported but "obviously there is fear among the people."

The quake struck at 7.39pm local time and its epicenter was 105km below the Andes mountains northeast of Calama, according to the US Geological Survey, which monitors earthquake activity.

WASHINGTON: NASA yesterday launched the latest in its family of high-tech meteorological satellites, adding to a constellation of spacecraft that watch storm development and weather conditions on Earth.

Th e Geostationary  Operational Environmental Satellite-P (GOES-P) lifted off from Cape Canaveral in Florida at 6.57pm local time on board a Delta IV rocket which will carry the weather-watching satellite to its orbit about 35,406km above the Earth's surface.

STRASBOURG: Executives from defunct oil giant Yukos told Europe's top rights court yesterday that Russia
had waged an illegal campaign to drive the company to bankruptcy, in a multi-billion-dollar claim.

Former Yukos bosses and stakeholders asked the court to award them US$98 billion in compensation (RM329.40 billion), the largest sum ever sought in a case before the European Court of Human Rights.

LONDON: The Bank of England froze its key lending rate yesterday at a record low level of 0.50 per cent, where it has been for a year, as Britain looks to strengthen its recovery from a record recession.

The BoE also decided against pumping more new money into the British economy. Both decisions follow a regular two-day policy meeting that had been widely expected by markets.

"The Bank of England's Monetary Policy Committee yesterday voted to maintain the official Bank Rate paid on commercial bank reserves at 0.50 per cent," the central bank said in a statement.

LONDON: British insurer Aviva posted a return to annual profits yesterday, and said it will seek growth in Europe, in contrast to its larger rival Prudential which is chasing rapid expansion within Asia.

Aviva, the country's second-biggest insurance group after Prudential by stock market capitalisation, said in a
results statement that net profit stood at £1.315 billion (RM6.665 billion) in 2009. That contrasted sharply with a
loss after tax of £885 million in the previous year.

LONDON: European main stock markets closed lower yesterday after an uneven set of US economic data and
as investors tried to get the measure of the latest twists in the Greek debt crisis, dealers said.

In London, the main FTSE 100 index slipped 0.11 per cent to 5,527.16 points. In Paris, the CAC 40 fell 0.37 per cent to 3,828.41 points and in Frankfurt, the DAX was down 0.39 per cent at 5,795.32 points.

NEW YORK: US stocks closed yesterday with sentiment lifted by a drop in the number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 47.38 points (0.46 per cent) in closing trades to 10,444.14, a day after the market ended on a flat note.

The Nasdaq composite added 11.63 points to 2,292.31 while the broad-market Standard & Poor's 500 index gained 4.18 points (0.37 per cent) to 1,122.97. Before the opening bell, the Labour Department said fewer Americans claimed jobless benefits in the week to February 20.

BARCELONA: A massive wave slammed into a cruise ship with 2,000 passengers in the Mediterranean yesterday, leaving two dead and six injured, Spain's maritime rescue service said.

The freak wave "smashed windows in the lounge area" of the Maltese - flagged Greek Cypriot-owned Louis
Majesty, a spokesman for the service said.

He said the accident occurred yesterday evening off the coast of Spain's northeastern Catalonia region as the
vessel was en route for the I talian port of Genoa.

WASHINGTON: The United States yesterday rejected claims by a Russian anti-drug official that it has abandoned efforts to combat opium production in Afghanistan.

"We are aggressively pursuing that because ultimately, you know, part of the solution in Afghanistan has to be  the emergence of a strong, legitimate Afghan economy," said State Department spokesman Philip Crowley.

Viktor Ivanov, the director of Russia's federal narcotics control service, on Saturday accused the US of allowing Afghan drug producers to operate by deciding to abandon the eradication of poppy crops.

to Britain with colour and pomp, although a row over his polygamy threatened to cloud the trip.

TOKYO: Japan's Nissan Motor said yesterday it would recall nearly 540,000 vehicles worldwide, most of them in the United States, due to brake pedal defects and faulty fuel gauges.

Nissan said it plans "to inspect and, if necessary, repair brake pedal pins and fuel-gauge components on certain trucks and minivans".

"No accidents or injuries have been  reported with these issues," it added. The recalls also affect Canada,
Mexico, the Middle East, Ukraine, Russia and Taiwan, Nissan North America said in a statement.

SINGAPORE: Singapore and the European Union will start talks next week on a free-trade agreement seen
as an "important stepping stone" in the EU's engagement with Southeast Asia, officials said yesterday.

EU Trade Commissioner Karel De Gucht and Singapore Trade Minister Lim Hng Kiang made the announcement during a meeting in the city- State. The first round of negotiations will be held from March 8 to  12 in Singapore, the country's trade ministry said in a statement.

CONCEPCION: Thousands more troops deployed across Chile yesterday as armed vigilantes patrolled neighbourhoods to ward off looters and protect residents already traumatised by a devastating earthquake.

"The thugs have taken over the city. Now we are not afraid of the earthquakes, we're afraid of the criminals," Marcelo Rivera, the mayor of Hualpen, said on a Chilean radio station. President Michelle Bachelet doubled the

WASHINGTON: The US Supreme Court refused yesterday to block a law allowing same-sex marriages in Washington DC, clearing the way for the legislation to go into effect today.

Chief Justice John Roberts, in a three-page opinion that sidestepped the legal issues involved, said the matter should be decided by local courts and decision makers in the US capital city. Roberts rejected a petition
by opponents of gay marriage for a stay that would have prevented the law from taking effect.

LONDON: Europe's biggest oil company BP said yesterday that it will aim to cut more costs to improve its profitability over the next two or three years. "BP today outlined plans to further boost efficiency and reduce costs with the aim of improving its annual underlying pre-tax profitability by more than US$3 billion (RM7.43 billion) over the next two to three years," the group said in a strategy update. The bulk of the improvement is being targeted at BP's refining and marketing segment. BP aims to boost the unit's underlying pre-tax profit by US$2 billion within two or three years.

WASHINGTON: One of the most common weed killers in the world, atrazine, causes chemical castration in  frogs and could be contributing to a worldwide decline in amphibian populations, a study published yesterday showed.

Researchers compared 40 male control frogs with 40 male frogs reared from hatchlings until full sexual maturity, in atrazine concentrations similar to those experienced year-round in areas where the chemical is found.

TOKYO: Japan's jobless rate fell to 4.9 per cent in January, improving by 0.3 percentage point from the previous month, against market expectations of 5.1 per cent, government data showed yesterday.

The unemployment rate for men fell by 0.1 percentage point to 5.2 per cent, and the rate for women fell by 0.5 percentage point to 4.6 per cent, said the ministry of internal affairs and communications.

There were 46 jobs available for every 100 job seekers in January, up from 43 jobs in December, the labour ministry said separately.

NEW YORK: Wall Street stocks jumped yesterday, buoyed by corporate optimism and a mixed bag of economic data as well as speculation that eurozone nations may reveal a bailout deal to help debt-hit Greece.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average  rose 78.53 points (0.76 per cent) to close at 10,403.79, after ending the
week slightly higher last Friday amid upwardly revised data on US economic growth.

The Nasdaq composite gained 35.31 points (1.58 per cent) to 2,273.57 while the broad-market Standard & Poor's 500 index edged up 11.22 points (1.02 per cent) to 1,115.71.

LONDON: A Cold War-era nuclear bunker in Britain has been put up for sale on online auction site eBay, and by this morning, bidders had pushed the price up to £19,300 (RM99,200).

"A rare opportunity to acquire a piece of Cold War history," read the sale advert on the website. "Set in a stunning location with glorious views. Your own nuclear bunker within a plot of land and much original equipment."

After being advertised at a starting price of £500 late last Thursday, a bidding war saw the price of the underground shelter rocket. The auction will end on Sunday.
