KUALA LUMPUR: Enforcement officers from the Federal Territory Islamic Religious Department (Jawi) tonight confiscated seven copies of the book, "Allah Liberty & Love - Courage To Reconcille Faith & Freedom" by controversial author, Irshad Manji, as the content is deemed to be contrary to Islamic teachings.

Chief senior assistant director of Jawi's enforcement division, Wan Jaafar Wan Ahmad said the raid, involving eight officers, was conducted at 8.45pm on a bookshop in a well-known shopping complex in Bangsar.

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia is now more selective in its search for foreign direct investments (FDI) with focus placed on quality investments which will facilitate the country's transition into a high-income economy, says Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

He said the government was looking for quality FDIs which brought with it high-technology, green and alternative energy technologies, and knowledge intensive industries.

KUALA LUMPUR: The confidentiality of customer information is clearly protected by the Banking and Financial Institution Act 1989 (Bafia), Bank Negara Malaysia Governor Tan Sri Dr Zeti Akhtar Aziz said.

She pointed out that it was an offence under the Act for any officer of the bank to disclose any information relating to the account of its customer, and banks have in place control and effective processes to ensure compliance with this secrecy provision.

KUALA TERENGGANU: Mechanic Azhar Yusof, 31, today pleaded not guilty to abusing his girlfriend's son until he went into a coma for two weeks.

He is alleged to have slapped the face and head of Muhammad Danish Aiman Abdullah, two, with intention to kill, in a house in Kampung Tualang, Manir, at 9pm on April 20.

The charge under Section 307 of the Penal Code carries sentence of 10 years' jail and fine and sentence of up to 20 years' jail if the victim is injured.

KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Abdul Rahim Dahalan, who had participated in the North Pole parachute expedition in 2007, died at his younger brother's house in Kampung Tengah, Kluang, Johor at 5.45pm today.

His younger brother, Ramlan Ibrahim told Bernama that Abdul Rahim, 65, passed away in the presence of family members following to a heart ailment.

Abdul Rahim, who was also known as "Rahim King", had once served as special officer to former prime minister, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

KUALA LUMPUR: An ex-lawyer and a clerk pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court here today to cheating a developer over the sale of a land involving RM280,000.

Ex-lawyer Zainudin Maksom, 40, and clerk G. Naraynen, 56, were jointly charged with cheating Elite Prospective Sdn Bhd director Lim Seng Kok, 54, over the sale of a land worth RM2.3 million in Mukim Damansara, Petaling District.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Rotary Club aims to raise at least RM150,000 through its Cyclothon Malaysia 2012, a charity cycle event scheduled for June 22-July 4, to fund its community projects.

Rotary Club Damansara president and Cyclothon organising chairman Rajendran Periasamy said, the event would be led by experienced cyclist Mark Adams, a British civil engineer, who had lived in Malaysia for 15 years.

KUALA LUMPUR: A 63-year-old woman, who fell in love with 'a general from the United States' in an internet scam, had given him over RM5 million purportedly for investment in assets for the past two years.

City Commercial CID chief ACP Izany Abdul Ghany said she raised the money by selling her bungalow in Bangsar for RM3.5 million and a land for RM1.5 million.

Izany said she also borrowed money from friends and relatives to be remitted to the 'man' who was actually an internet syndicate.

KEPALA BATAS: Former Deputy Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shariff Omar today dismissed talk that he will contest on a PAS ticket in the Tasek Gelugor parliamentary constituency in
the next general election.

Mohd Shariff, who is a former MP for Tasek Gelugor, said his loyalty to Umno should not be questioned as he was still the head of the Permatang Haji Hassan Umno Branch.

He said several blogs had spread the rumours because he was on friendly terms with people from both sides of the political divide.

PRETORIA: Since the beginning of this year, a total of 220 rhinos in South Africa has been lost to illegal killings, says the Department of Environmental Affairs.

The Kruger National Park, Limpopo Province, North West Province and KwaZulu-Natal Province remain the areas hardest hit by rhino poachers, collectively accounting for 207 of the rhinos killed this year alone.

SEREMBAN: Negri Sembilan will only sell water to Selangor if there is a surplus in supply, said Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan.

He said the state would not sell it if the supply was inadequate to meet the needs of the people in the state.

"We are now at the initial stage of negotiations with National Water Services Commission (SPAN). The commission wanted to buy water from the state to meet the demands in Selangor.

KUALA LUMPUR: Employees Provident Fund (EPF) has again been given a five-star rating under the Star Rating System conducted in 2011 by Malaysian Administrative Modernisation and Management Planning Unit (MAMPU).

EPF's chief executive officer Tan Sri Azlan Zainol said the high rating not only recognised EPF's management of its core business but also acknowledged the dedication of EPF's staff to rendering the highest quality of service to customers.

JASIN: Thirteen NGOs have lodged a police report over the circulation of a defamatory SMS against Sungai Rambai State Assemblyman Hassan Abdul Rahman.

The NGOs included the Jasin branch of the 4B Youth Movement, Batu Gajah Pasir branch of the Malaysian Association of Youth Clubs and Jasin District Youth Council.

RIO DE JANEIRO: An audit by a consultancy firm has revealed that Brazil's first division football clubs have a combined debt of US$1.85 billion (RM5.8 billion), Xinhua news agency reported.

Four of Brazil's top five debt-stricken clubs are from Rio de Janeiro with Botafogo's US$270 million deficit placing the entity in first place.

Fluminense is next (US$194 million) followed by Vasco da Gama (US$$185 million), Atletico-MG (US$176 million) and Flamengo (US$170 million).

KUALA LUMPUR: Khazanah Nasional says its commitment to Malaysia Airlines' recapitalisation exercise is contingent upon the national carrier's performance.

"We can put in the money but we also need to see results because this is public money that we are talking about," Khazanah Director Tan Sri Azman Mokhtar told reporters at Axiata Group Bhd's annual general meeting here today.

KUALA LUMPUR: The US$20 billion (RM62.7 billion) Petronas Refinery and Petrochemical Integrated Development (RAPID) project in Pengerang, Johor will potentially require 10 to 12 partners, Petronas Group chief operating officer Datuk Wan Zulkiflee Wan Ariffin said.
ALOR STAR: The government faces difficulty in restricting the entry of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) proponents into the country as it is masterminded by certain individuals, said Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Jamil Khir Baharom.  

He said these individuals were responsible for importing the problem into the country.
PUTRAJAYA: The Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah has advised university students, particularly those from Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), against participating in street demonstrations.

The Sultan, who is also UPM Chancellor, said street demonstrations were very much against the country's culture as they caused various problems to the community.
