Stories from by K.J. John

LIKE all Malaysians, I am disturbed and distressed with “one more hill-slope crumbling!”

This story is being re-enacted many times because we have at least 145 local authorities who approve unsavoury projects, with equally unintended consequences.

Often, the ordinary citizens and tax payers only know about their poor or bad decision-making related to the projects.

I HAVE been an unashamed supporter of President Barack Obama from before the time he was elected president. I even told my third child to learn from him about servant leadership; when my son was going to study in America even before Obama was nominated by the Democrats.

I HAD three "formation-experiences" which helped define me, and later helped me pursue an intensive study within the field of organisational life. I share them so we can all learn and understand the nuances of such issues of organisational life, a little better. These are: œ When I finished my first standard one class, I could not be promoted. I complained and my father transferred me to another school to repeat standard one.

I AM a member of a few organisations; and in each of them there are “fatherfigures,” “mother-figures” and “sibling-figures”.

When each speaks and relate to others, or choose topics for conversation, they “declare their world views” and basic assumptions about their life and life views.

“BEWARE kleptocracy” screamed recent headlines.

And, as it does happen in the converged world of communication and media today, a new compound word is formed for the popular knowledge and promotion among Malaysians.

THE premise of any public policy initiative must be to solve or resolve a recurring common problem within public spaces which requires executive involvement and jurisdictional authority for resolution.

TUN Dr Ling Liong Sik is a good friend, an OP, and I believe a fairly honest person, which means he will not cheat anyone personally, or lie blatantly.

He was the only RMC (Royal Military College) boy who has ever achieved the “honours award at the OBS, as a young boy!”

IN ANY constitutional democracy the Rule of Law is a categorical imperative. The constitution and all other related subsidiary rules and regulations defi ne the nature of the Social and Legal Contracts. Malaysia has both social and legal contracts which defi ne these for all and sundry.

I CANNOT resist writing my comments about the Presidential Elections in the US, at this stage of their campaign. I would simply summarise it as two different and contrasting styles and philosophies of leadership.

SINCE the first Global Environment Gatherings, now called the Green Summits, the last one held in Rio, the phrase “think global and act local” has become their activation momentum.

But the most serious problem facing the world today is our explicit discrepancy between our “espoused theories and their theories-in-use”.

A FRIEND alerted me to the “‘devil we know’ versus the one we do not know” quote by Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad. My friend says, “He knows the devil and has had enough of the devil that he knows!” I am not sure who he is actually talking about but I have my suspicions!

IF I understand the law correctly, much of the Evidence Act focuses on the due process and material basis on which evidence has to be adduced to establish a matter before the courts.

The controversy surrounding it is the doctrine of “innocent until proven guilty!”

SOMETIME in 1997, when the National Information Technology Council of Malaysia (NITC) briefed cabinet members on the National IT Agenda, one of the recommendations of its secretariat was: “The reformation of many outdated and irrelevant acts of law which contradicts the realisation of the information and multimedia age”.

A MEMBER of Parliament in Malaysia is addressed as a “Yang Berhormat” in our rather feudal culture out of respect for their role and responsibilities as an elected representative of all the people in the particular constituency.

I AM no lawyer, even though if I had a real choice, I would have pursued law studies. Still, my interest in legal issues centres on good versus poor governance related to public space morality.

I HAVE not subscribed to Twitter, although I have a Twitter account and even some followers, because I signed up just after it was launched in Silicon Valley. A friend of mine there, Thomas Mathew asked to me subscribe to this new and exciting @ venture. I did and yet did not! I have not activated my place into Twitterspace.
